Page 2 of Tainted Deception

Unease filtered through me, but I shoved it away. I trusted Kian. He wouldn’t say anything about what he’d heard to his dad or anyone else.

At least that was what I thought. Until the next night went to complete shit.

“Give me your key.”

Kian stared at me expectantly, and I lifted my lip in a sneer. “I don’t have it.”

“Rynn, don’t play fucking games right now,” Jace murmured, his hold on my arm staying tight as we stood in front of the door of my room.

“It’s in my bag,” I snapped, “which is still at The Pit.”

Jace grumbled under his breath before pushing me into Kian’s arms. “I have something in my room we can use.”

Jace moved across the hall, unlocking the room he’d taken when Gage was with Chris. My eyes drifted down the hall to where Tripp and Pratt were lingering near the stairs. They were both rigid as they looked at each other, making me wonder how fragile this whole peace deal was between their gangs. I slowly turned my head, glancing at the emergency stairwell, and Kian’s grip tightened, as if he knew what I was thinking.

“Don’t,” he warned. “We have guys outside the building. You wouldn’t get far.”

Panic slithered through my chest and squeezed when Jace reappeared with a bag and began picking the lock of my door. I just needed one chance to slip away, and I’d be gone. But Jace and Kian weren’t giving me an inch of fucking breathing room.

The lock clicked, and Jace pushed open my door before stepping back to make room for Kian to drag me inside. Once all three of us were in my dorm, Jace made sure the door was closed before he dropped the bag to the floor and pulled out his phone. I stayed silent, making a list of all my hidden weapons in the room. I’d added even more since I’d been stuck at Jace’s side, and I only needed to get my hands on one of them.

“Sit down,” Kian ordered, leading me toward the couch.

I glowered at him, purposefully sitting on the far end of the couch where I had a gun under the cushion. Kian was watching me carefully, and I leaned back, crossing my arms, my gaze darting between the both of them.

“Gage will come for her,” Jace muttered, lifting his head to look at Kian. “I have more guys coming up just in case.”

Kian frowned. “We agreed he’d go back to Pacific Point with my men.”

“Chris wants him back,” Jace replied coolly.

“That’s not what we agreed,” Kian hissed, moving away from me to get in Jace’s face.

I raised an eyebrow, watching the exchange with interest. One spark, and their entire charade of getting along would explode. As they argued, I subtly slipped my hand into the crack of the cushions, feeling around until my fingers brushed the metal of my gun. My heart dipped when Jace locked eyes with me before his gaze dropped to my hand. Kian noticed his change and spun around to look at me. The silence was deafening for a moment before I made my move.

I got a grip on the handle of the pistol and quickly pulled it out as they both lunged at me. Jace snatched my wrist right as I clicked off the safety, and he wrenched my arm up until the gun was aimed at the ceiling. I smashed my other palm against his face, attempting to shove him back. Kian came up on my other side, pushing my arm away from Jace and pinning it to my side while Jace fought to tear the gun from my hold.

“Let it go, Rynn,” Jace gritted out.

I forced out a laugh. “You two are so fucked when I get out of here.”

“Then it’s a good thing you’re not leaving.” Jace ripped the weapon from my hand and backed away as he tucked the gun behind his back while walking toward the bag he’d dropped next to the door.

I screamed out threats when Kian twisted me around until my chest was pressed into the couch. They pulled my arms behind me, and cold metal closed around my wrists tight enough that there was no way I could slip out of them. Once the handcuffs were locked, Kian pulled me back up until I was sitting again.

“You ready to tell us who you’re with?” Kian asked, standing in front of me.

“Fuck you.”

“How’d you get the Jackals to turn on us?” Jace asked as he sat on the couch next to me.

I pressed my lips together, not saying a word as my chest heaved. It had taken a lot of whispered conversations to make that happen, but it didn’t matter now. Kian and Jace were never supposed to come back on campus. It was all fucked.

The door swung open, and I watched Tripp and Pratt stride in, along with three other guys. All of them ignored me as if I wasn’t even there, and I silently seethed as Kian crossed the room to talk to them. Jace didn’t move from the couch, his body tense as he stayed focused on me. I raised my eyes to his, straightening up and shifting in the cuffs.

I smiled sweetly, keeping my glare murderous. “What’s the plan, Jace? Going to keep me hostage in my dorm room?”
