Page 3 of Tainted Deception

He didn’t answer as he shoved his hand down the cushions, looking for any other hidden items. I had a knife under the couch, and I was sure it wouldn’t take them long to find it if they kept looking.

“I think the college might find it suspicious if I stop showing up for classes,” I taunted. “The police chief won’t sit back if students start disappearing from his university.”

“Don’t worry about that,” he murmured, turning to face me after he searched under the rest of the cushions. “But I do want to know one thing.”

“I’m not telling you who I’m with.”

“You will. Eventually.” He pushed hair out of my face before gripping it to keep me from moving away from his touch. “You realize when I claimed you that I was protecting you from Chris, don’t you? You might not have liked it, but at least you weren’t stuck with him.”

“Liked it?” I hissed. “You were a controlling dick.”

“Because everything goes back to Chris,” he snapped in a hushed voice.

“And if I hadn’t obeyed you?” I sneered, my heart pounding painfully. “Would you have handed me over to your stepdaddy?”

He didn’t say a word, and his face remained unreadable as I glared at him. His fingers curled tighter in my hair when voices came from my bedroom.

“I was wrong.” His eyes grew stormy. “I thought you felt some sort of way about me after that summer. But you serving me up to the Phantoms? That was fucking cold, Rynn.”

“I warned you that I would never work for Chris. Or your gang.” I swallowed my emotions, refusing to let his words get to me. “Try to keep me here. It doesn’t fucking change anything. I won’t fall in line to do what you want.”

“You realize that Kian and I didn’t tell our gangs that it was you who fucked us over?” He tilted his head. “That’s the only reason you’re still on campus and not in Pacific Point.”

“Your threats won’t work,” I spat out. “Tell them or don’t—I don’t give a shit.”

He let go of my hair, creating a bit more space between us. “Whoever you’re with must have some power because I really think you’re telling the truth. It’s stupid not to fear the Disciples.”

Kian stepped out of my bedroom, interrupting our conversation. “Gage was just seen coming back onto campus.”

Jace tore his gaze from me to look at Kian, and my stomach churned at the thought of Gage walking into this. After seeing what Chris did to him last time, there was no way I’d stay quiet again. Ellie would get involved after this. If I was in trouble, she’d come to my rescue whether I asked for it or not. I hoped Gage would go to her instead of looking for me. Jace and Kian didn’t want me dead—at least not right now. If they did, I wouldn’t be sitting in my dorm with them. I’d be on my way to their city. No, they had something else planned for me.

“Not a word when he shows up,” Kian warned, a frown on his face as his eyes fell on me.

“He’s not stupid,” I retorted. “He won’t just walk through the door.”

Jace chuckled darkly. “He’s not stupid. But when it comes to you? I don’t think he’s patient enough to think it out. Not if he knows you’re with us.”

I ground my teeth, sagging back against the couch. I really hoped Jace was fucking wrong.

Striding down the path,I could hear the muffled music from The Pit before the building even came into view. I hurried my pace, my heart pounding like it had been my entire drive back to campus. Rynn’s phone had been going straight to voicemail for the last half hour, meaning something was seriously fucking wrong. When I called Ellie, she tried tracking it, only to find out that it was turned off. This was the last place she was at.

The moonlight revealed the warehouse as I got closer, and I ignored the students milling around the entrance until one of them stepped right in front of me. I glared at Hyde, ready to shove him out of my way, until I caught the worry on his face.

“You shouldn’t go in there,” he warned gruffly.

I raised an eyebrow. “And why’s that?”

“The place is crawling with Grimrose and Disciples members.”

My heart dropped, and I rushed past him, pulling my gun from my waistband when he darted in front of me again.

“Get the fuck out of my way,” I snarled.

“She’s not in there,” Hyde informed me. “They took her back to her dorm.”

“Who did?”
