“This is not how it’s going to work,” he replied, turning his head to the side. “You really must not care for her.”

He was looking at the dorms, and my stomach churned as I took a step toward him. “Stay the hell away from her.”

“Rynn Rhodes.” His words had ice running down my spine. “We know all her classes. Her room number. The car she drives. We could get to her before you even realized what happened.”

“I will fucking kill you,” I snarled, my rage taking over as I stalked toward him. “If you touch her—”

“You’re in no position to make threats.” He cut me off sharply, his eyes flashing with annoyance. “We have eyes on this campus. On her. And you. The family wants you back under their orders.”

“I am,” I snapped, keeping my voice low. “You haven’t told me what the hell they want.”

“Answer my calls. Keep doing whatever you’re doing until the elections.” He slipped his hands into his pockets, leaning closer. “Do not tell a fucking soul that we’re here. That’s it for now. You think you can handle that?”

I clenched my teeth together, attempting to keep control. I wanted to fucking kill him right here. But I didn’t know how much he was bluffing. If the family really had eyes on campus, killing him would do nothing except make this worse. Their reach was huge, and even if I somehow got Rynn off campus, I wasn’t sure it would be enough to keep her safe.

“I got it,” I bit out.

“Good. Next time I call—fucking answer. Or we’re taking her. I think that would make you more compliant.”

I nearly lunged at him, but he quickly strode away when a group of students came around the corner. He slipped into a blue sedan. My heart sank as I watched him drive away. I didn’t see how the hell I was going to get out of this. Or keep Rynn out of it.

“Fuck,” I cursed as I moved toward the dorms. I should tell Ellie. But if I did that, she’d get Rynn out of Little Haven. Which would alert them that I’d spilled, and they’d go after Rynn, no matter where she was. She wouldn’t be safe. The guilt of keeping this to myself was fucking eating at me. Ellie had been there for me. She’d gotten me out, and here I was, keeping this from her.

I hurried up the stairs, pulling the key for Rynn’s door out. I needed a shower and then sleep. After unlocking her door and going inside, I quietly closed it behind me. The room was silent, and I crept toward her bedroom, only to freeze in the doorway.

Disbelief tore through me as I clenched my fists, taking in what I was seeing. Rynn was passed out in the middle of her bed, but it was who was with her that had rage boiling my veins.

Not one, but both of the assholes were with her.

Jace had his arm wrapped around her, keeping her back pressed to his chest. She was lying diagonally, her legs tangled with Kian’s. They were sleeping over the blankets, revealing that they were all still wearing the same clothes from last night. Except Jace, who was only wearing a pair of sweatpants. Seeing as he wasn’t covered in blood, I guessed he’d showered. My pulse thudded when I gazed at Rynn’s face. She looked peaceful. As if she wasn’t in the arms of enemies.

I flipped my tongue piercing as the cold truth slapped me in the face. Were they her enemies? Jace had literally spent hours being beaten, and he still hadn’t said a word when he easily could have. Neither of them had done anything to hurt her. They’d kept her out of Pacific Point and away from their gangs. But how far would they go? Because this would end, and at some point, they’d have to choose.

It took everything in me to back up instead of ripping them both out of her bed. Seeing Jace holding her like I wanted to had a weight smothering my chest. But I didn’t want to wake her. She’d had a long damn night. And I guessed Jace deserved somewhat of a reprieve after what happened. They could sleep a little longer. But this sure as fuck wasn’t going to become a regular thing.

Rounding the short counter, I went into her kitchenette and opened the cupboard, digging through it until I found my tequila. I twisted off the cap, taking a long swig straight from the bottle. The alcohol warmed my chest, and I was itching to light a cigarette, but I didn’t want to go all the way back downstairs and outside.

“Day drinking?”

I snapped my head up to see Kian on the other side of the counter. His hair was a mess, and he rubbed sleep from his eyes before settling on a barstool. My grip on the glass bottle tightened. I did not like how casual he was being. Like being in Rynn’s room was the most normal thing in the world.

“I’m sorry. Did I wake you?” I asked, my voice mocking.

“I heard you the second the door opened.”

Rynn had told me he was a light sleeper, and for a split second, I caught myself feeling relieved. What if it hadn’t been me coming through the door? Kian would have heard the threat before her. He spoke up again, pulling me from my thoughts.

“Jace told me you two fought.” His gaze trailed down me. “You don’t have a mark on you.”

His words weren’t news, since Rynn had texted me to inform me that a fight between Jace and me was what they’d used as an explanation for Jace’s injuries. I hoped Pratt believed that too because we didn’t need to make the Disciples suspicious.

“Did you expect anything else?” I shot him a smug grin. “Consider this your warning not to fuck with me.”

Kian arched an eyebrow. “If you beat him, then why is he the one in bed with Rynn right now?”

My smirk fell flat in an instant. “I had to deal with business.”

“I don’t know what happened last night, but something changed,” he murmured, glancing toward the bedroom. “She told us about her brother.”
