Page 70 of Tainted Deception

My heart skipped a beat. No way would Rynn divulge her secrets. “What about her brother?”

“That he’s the reason she hates Grimrose and the Disciples.”

Holy shit. Why the hell would she admit that? I took another drink from the bottle, trying to keep calm. I knew saving Jace would bite me in the ass. She believed he cared for her now. Enough to actually talk to him about important things.

“What are you doing here?” I gritted out.

“I wanted to talk to Rynn—”

“I don’t mean why you came here today,” I interrupted. “I want to know why you’re going near her at all. Why you fucking kissed her last night. To keep watch over her for your gang? Or because you want her?”

He stared at me, his eyes darkening in suspicion. “What I want with her is none of your business.”

I snickered. “Try again. She is my business. I’m not going anywhere.”

“I’ve wanted her since I met her three years ago,” he stated, leaning his forearms on the counter. “That hasn’t changed.”

“Who would you choose?” I murmured quietly. “Your dad or her?”

“I’m keeping her out of it.”

“That’s not possible anymore,” I retorted. “There’s no keeping her out of it. Hayes is going to want her out of the way sooner or later. And I want to know—will you hand her over to him or go against your blood to keep her safe?”

His answer was instant. “I won’t let her get hurt.”

“Not good enough.”

“I don’t owe you anything,” he spat out, standing from the barstool. “She’s notyourgirl. And she kissed me back last night.”

“I’m willing to do anything to keep her safe. Jace learned that last night.” My words had curiosity flashing across his features. “I’ll kill for her. It doesn’t matter who it is.”

“You’ve been threatening me all year.” He reached over the counter and snagged my tequila. “It kind of loses its impact after a while.”

I bit my tongue as I stared at him. I couldn’t be with Rynn every second. Of all the people at this school, I knew that Kian and Jace had no connection to my past. Meaning they weren’t the eyes in the school that King was talking about. If Kian wasn’t going to leave her alone, at least he could be useful in making sure they didn’t get to her if I wasn’t here. But he needed to know there was an outside threat.

“Things are changing.” I paused, silently fighting with myself about whether I wanted to keep talking. “Others are threatening her.”

He froze before pulling the bottle away from his mouth. “Who?”

“People with more reach than yours and Jace’s gangs combined,” I said gruffly.

“Who?” he repeated.

“Just keep an eye out for people who don’t belong on campus.”

“It would be easier if you just told me who it was.” He lost interest in the alcohol as he tried figuring it out.

“Can’t do that.”

“Why?” He crossed his arms. “I thought you and Rynn worked together.”

“We do. This isn’t about our boss. And Rynn has no idea. It needs to stay that way.”

“So…it’s about you? Or Little Haven?”

“Oh my fuck,” I muttered. “Just forget I said anything—”

“I’d kill for her too,” he cut in. “I’ll watch her.”
