“Yeah, Catie’s something like thirty-seven weeks but twins usually come early, so it could be any moment. Saxon said this morning that yesterday she spent all day cleaning, which is apparently a sign it’s not far away.”

“Nesting, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Is she terrified? I think I would be, especially with twins.”

“No, she’s surprisingly calm. She told me she’s excited and determined to make the most of the experience. Not that I think it’ll be her last pregnancy. Saxon seems determined to form a full rugby team.”

I chuckle. “I can’t imagine him as a dad. He’s so irreverent and boyish. I thought Kip would be the first to have kids out of you three.”

“I have a feeling he won’t be far behind. He’s been seeing this girl up in Gisborne.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah. He flies up and sees her, and she’s coming down over the Easter weekend.”

“What about you?” I ask, curious. “Do you want kids?”

“Gotta get a wife first.”

“How very traditional of you,” I say, and he gives a short laugh. “So you do see yourself settling down at some point?” I ask.

He slides down in his seat a little, stretching out his long legs and crossing them at the ankle. “Nah. Don’t think it’s in the stars for me.”

“Why? You’d make a great dad.”

He gives me an amused look. “Clearly, you don’t know me very well.”

“Aw, Damon, I’ve known you for fifteen years! You act as if you’re a bad boy, but I don’t think you are, deep down. I think you’re a pussy cat.”

He meets my eyes, still amused. “Meow,” he says lazily, and something about the way he says it makes my heart bangs on my ribs.

“A very naughty, kinky pussy cat,” I add, and he laughs. I smile. “Seriously, though. I don’t think you’re half as mean as you make yourself out to be.”

His smile fades, and he shrugs. “I’m cursed where relationships are concerned. Any decent girl should run a mile when they see me coming.”

My mouth opens to reply, but his words ring in my head, when they see me coming, and suddenly all I can think of is how he’d look in those final moments of passion. Oh God…

His eyebrows lift, and his lips curve up a fraction. “Belle…”

I clear my throat and hastily change the subject. “Thank you for coming to my rescue today.”

“Oh, I don’t think you needed me at all. If I hadn’t come in, I think you’d have soon sent him away with his tail—or some other part of his anatomy—between his legs.”

“I don’t know.” I shiver. “I tried to get free, and I couldn’t. I don’t want to think what might have happened if you hadn’t pulled him off me.”

He frowns, and for a moment I think he’s about to scold me for inviting Cole into my bedroom, which is what Alex would have done had he been the one who’d turned up. But he doesn’t. His voice is a bit bossy though when he says, “Well, if he ever turns up again, for God’s sake just ring the police.”

“Yes, sir,” I reply before I can stop myself.

His eyebrows rise slowly. I hold his gaze, and we study each other for a long moment.

“Are you going to be trouble on this journey?” he asks.

“Of course not.” I nudge him with my elbow. “I’m just teasing.”

“Hmm.” He narrows his eyes at me, but he doesn’t push it, and changes the subject instead. “Alex said you went to the Foo Fighters concert in January?”
