“It’s okay,” I tell her, not wanting to spoil her hen night. “Damon sorted me out.”

She moves back. Her eyes are shining, but she sniffs and just gives a short laugh. “Really?”

“He had magic fingers,” I say mischievously.

“Oh my God,” Juliette says, “I’ll never look at him the same way again.”

“Is he interested in you?” Aroha asks.

“I think so. But he says he values Alex’s friendship and their business partnership too much to make a move.”

“You were the one he was texting at dinner last night?” Gaby asks.

“Might be.”

Juliette laughs. “Were you texting him yesterday morning, too? He was staring at his phone as if someone had hit him with a spade.”

“I was sending him rude texts.”

“What kind of things?” Aroha wants to know.

“Messages with eggplant emojis and water droplets,” I reply, and they all whoop.

“We’ve totally got to get the two of you together,” Aroha says.

But Juliette frowns. “His reputation with women isn’t great.”

“He’d eat you for breakfast,” Gaby says to me, amused.

“One can only hope.”

They all giggle. “Seriously, though,” Gaby says, “Juliette’s right. He’s not got a great rep.”

I draw my knees up and wrap my arms around them. “I think he’s been hurt several times, and it’s made him very wary about letting anyone close.”

“That’s true,” Juliette admits.

“Are you talking about Rachel?” Aroha asks.

“That’s one of them,” Juliette replies. “His first girlfriend that I knew was called Emmi. He dated her for a couple of years at university.”

“What happened?” I ask.

“He called in at her flat one evening out of the blue and found her in bed with another guy.”

“Jesus,” Gaby says, “I didn’t know that.”

“Oh, poor Damon,” I whisper.

“What did he do?” Aroha asks.

“Just turned around and walked out. Refused to talk to her. Got drunk for, like, two weeks straight. Then he went a bit crazy for six months and slept with anything that moved. Eventually he met Bridget.”

“Didn’t she play badminton?” I ask.

Gaby nods. “Really well. She won the top tournament in New Zealand, and then announced she wanted to take part in the Olympics, and maybe even go professional. It meant traveling a lot. She asked him to go with her, but he was about to graduate, and Saxon and Kip were encouraging him to join Kingpinz, so I think they just parted ways. He was pretty cut up about it, though.”

“And we all know about what happened with Rachel,” Juliette says. “Fucking bitch. I could have strangled her.”
