Kylie stills for a moment as if in shock before she lets out a yelp and throws her arms around me, tackling me to the floor.

She’s no longer wary, now that she knows what it is and that I’m the father. Her outburst causes the egg to fly, and she screams but I catch it in my palm.

“I could’ve cracked it,” she whimpers but I let out a chuckle.

“It’s a lot sturdier than that.” I put it down on the rug and wrap my arms around Kylie then lean my forehead against hers. “We’re going to become parents.”

“We are?” she pants, and I nod.

“And I couldn’t be more proud of how quickly you came to our offspring’s defense.” I let out a low whistle. “You kicked a Draugar like it was nothing, and that’s something even most berserkers can’t do.”

“Proud of me...” she whispers under her breath, and her eyes glimmer with satisfaction. Squealing, she presses her mouth against mine and kisses me until I see stars.

I do my best to hide my amusement. Kylie is about to burst out of her skin, she keeps running around, while asking a thousand questions. Her face is red, eyes shiny with excitement.

“Wait,” Kylie says, struggling to put on her corset because her fingers keep trembling and a queasy expression flares across her face, “if I found it between my thighs, does that mean I hatched it?”

I nod and she lets out a confused sound, her face screwing up.

“That’s so not my style. Valkyrie’s don’t hatch.”

“It’s easier than normal births,” I shrug. “And they grow too big, too fast. You wouldn’t be able to keep it in your body and he would be born prematurely.”

Walking over to Kylie, I help her with the corset then plant a kiss on her shoulder.

Turning around, she looks up at me. “I didn’t even feel anything. I just woke up and it was there.”

“The process is painless,” I explain then frown. “I should’ve guided you on this, but I didn’t think it would happen that fast.”

“You sound pretty pleased, though,” Kylie teases, poking me in the chest. “I bet the great dragon is thrilled about his prowess.”

There’s no denying that.

Wrapping an arm around Kylie, I pick up the egg and start walking out of the room but she stops in her tracks.

“Where do you think you’re going?” she pants. “That egg needs to stay here, in our bed until it hatches.”

I shake my head. “We are all born in a cave. It can’t stay here, it’s unnatural.” It needs its natural habitat or it won’t ever thrive and come out strong.

Distress flares on Kylie’s face. “But...”

“It sounds strange, I know but you just have to trust me.”

Eventually she shrugs, agreeing and once we’re in the cave she looks on with wide eyes as I search for a dip to put it in but we need to make a bed first. I gather plant material from the outside and Kylie helps out.

Once we’re done with the layers, we put our baby to be in it and take a step back.

Kylie leans her head against my shoulder. “That’s it?”

Crossing my arms over my chest, I murmur, “It needs to incubate for a few months now and then it’ll be ready to hatch.” I press my lips against her temple. “Go on and keep it warm, precious.”

Gawking, Kylie stares at me in horror. “Are you saying I need to sit on it?”

I nod, not understanding the mortification. That’s how all female dragons do it, but Kylie’s flushing red in the face and she takes a step back.

“I’m not a chicken, Craven!” she cries. “I can’t do that.”
