“Have you told him that?”

“I haven’t told him anything. I swear he hides from me all day.”

“Are you also kind of hiding from him though?” She asked and laughed. “You could go trap him if you actually wanted to talk to him, Trista. Talk. Not just fuck him.”

“That sounds complicated.”

“That’s not complicated. You are making it complicated,” she laughed again. “Fucking tell him you love him. Say the words and watch literally everything about this situation change.”

“You and Utah with all these ideas,” I said and rolled my eyes.

“Logic doesn’t sit well with you, huh?”

“But what if there isn’t really any room left in his heart for me now, Memphis?”

“What?”

“He’s not mad at his wife anymore. He can’t blame her for what happened now. What if he’s just not capable of doing it all again?”

“Trista. Ask the man. He’s an asshole, but he’s really always been a pretty straightforward one.”

CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

She walked by me in the hallway like we were perfect strangers. She wasn’t even looking at me when our eyes met. She looked right through me. She’d even turned sideways slightly to make sure no part of herself would touch any part of me. I stood there like a confused dumbass for a couple seconds trying to process it before I grabbed her by the wrist to stop her dead in her tracks.

“I don’t fucking think so, little girl.”

“Excuse me?”

She tried to jump away from me when I grabbed her face in both hands. I backed her into the wall until her head thumped against it.

“We’ve been through this, Fancy Face. You can’t get away from me.”

She all but melted at the words, and her hands came up to hold both my wrists. Every bit of the resistance in her body was gone by the time my mouth was against hers. My tongue barely even moved across the seam of her lips for her to grant me that access. She moaned right into my mouth when I forced the front of my body against hers as hard as I could, and her fingernails dug into my wrists. Her eyes were still closed when I pulled back, but I left my forehead against hers.

“Jersey,” she whispered.

“You looked like you needed to be reminded who I am.”

“You could come to bed and remind me.”

“Triss, I don’t think that’s—.”

“Please, J,” she whimpered and closed her eyes again. “I can’t take much more of this distance.”

I meant what I’d told her. She did bring my heart back to life. She did make it easier to breathe when she was around.

But her words cracked my newly beating heart and halted the use of my lungs.

I put both arms around her and squeezed her until she probably couldn’t breathe either. Her fingers were digging into my shoulder blades a second later like having me crush her against me still wasn’t holding her tight enough.

“I don’t know what you need from me right now, Jersey. I don’t know how to do this. I haven’t done any of this before,” she mumbled into my chest. “But I’m here.”

I felt her body shake when she tried to inhale the next time, and I let go of her quickly just to look down at her face.

“Are you crying?” I asked and forced my hands back to the sides of her face to lift it back up to mine. I shook my head at her. “Don’t do that, Fancy Face. Not because of this. Because of me.” I swept my thumbs under both her eyes and kissed her forehead.
