I waved my hand dismissively. “Not applying. You more than earned the job.”

She shot me an exasperated look. “No offense, Mr Vincent, but I’m applying to be his secretary, not yours. He has the final say.”

“You’re hired.”

Chapter Six

JULIE

Blinking several times, I gave my attention back to Mr Andrews. He looked exhausted, and I was stunned to find his office in such turmoil when I showed up. I’d read about Grayson Andrews and he was always portrayed as smooth and put together. When Luka said that I needed to work to prove myself, I didn’t think twice about it. Whether or not I got the job, the poor man obviously needed help, and I didn’t mind doing it. It meant that I was going to need to come up with an excuse for missing work, but I would address that later.

“I’m sorry?”

Leaning back in his chair, he studied me with a hard look before repeating himself. “I said you’re hired. Luka said you were the one who did all this?” He gestured to his desk.

I nodded slowly. “Mr Vincent wanted me to help to prove myself.”

He grimaced. “Well, as inappropriate as his request was, I’m grateful for your efforts. I’ve been struggling without a secretary and you obviously know what you’re doing. Plus, I trust Bennett and Luka’s judgment and they wouldn’t have brought you up here if they didn’t think you could handle it. When can you start?”

My mouth opened and closed like a fish. I didn’t think it’d be that easy. Yes, I organized a little and answered some phone calls, but I wouldn’t consider that a job winning performance. It was just the basics. I couldn’t do half of what a normal secretary should be able to do since I didn’t know what paperwork went to what offices or what he needed submitted and what he needed to keep. All the phone calls I answered were just me putting them off until a later time in the schedule, since he was obviously busy.

“Mr Andrews, I–”

“I’ll give you a huge bonus if you start on Monday.”

I let out a startled laugh. “Monday?”

He nodded, not a hint of amusement in his face. He looked almost… desperate. I swallowed hard. I wanted to start right away, he obviously needed the help, but I felt guilty quitting my job with no notice. The normal procedure was two weeks. Longer if they needed me to find my replacement for them.

“Um…”

His phone rang, and he let out a heavy sigh. “I need to get this. Let me know when would be a good day for you to start. The sooner the better, if you don’t mind. If you’ll excuse me.” He picked up the phone, pushing to his feet so he could pace while he talked. Luka gestured to the exit, him and Bennett following behind me.

Once the door to his office was shut, we all let out a collective sigh.

“That was intense,” Bennett mumbled.

“You’re telling me,” Luka snorted. “I’m really glad I’m not the man in charge right now. That was a shitshow.” He turned to face me, smiling brightly. “You did great, though. Grayson was right. It was wrong of me to ask you to work that long without warning. I promise, you’ll be paid for your efforts even if you decide not to take the job.”

Bennett jerked to face me, looking legitimately worried. “You’re taking the job, right?”

I rolled my lips between my teeth to hide my smile. “Yes, I’d like to. I just don’t know about starting on Monday. I haven’t given notice at my office and the normal procedure is two weeks.”

He grimaced. “Two weeks is too long. Grayson needs help now.”

Luke bobbed his head in agreement. “Tell you what. Give me your boss’s phone number. I’ll contact him myself. I’m sure if I explain things and pay for a replacement for the two weeks you were meant to work, they’ll be fine with it. Besides, the two weeks notice thing is just a courtesy. It’s not required.”

They both looked at me pleadingly. When my gaze strayed back to Mr Andrews, who was back to sitting at his desk, one hand buried in his hair and a deep frown on his face as he went over some paperwork, I relented.

“Alright, I suppose that works. Monday it is. My boss is out but–”

My phone rang, interrupting me. When I pulled it out, I winced. “Speak of the devil. Excuse me for just one moment.”

They both nodded, and I wandered away to answer the phone. “Mr Sanders, I–”

“Where the hell are you?”

“I’m sorry, something came up, and I needed to–”
