Alejandro was right though, whoever dumped the body had decided to do it right at the front of our property instead of closer inside where it was more secluded. Our gates had been open for the past few days for Halloween decorating so it wasn’t like they didn’t have the opportunity to get closer.
“Did you notice the tattoo on his neck?” Kenji said as Elsie came over, Connor trying to bring her back.
“Connor stop. It isn’t like I haven’t seen a dead body before. Have you forgotten that I am married to the head of the Irish Mafia?” She deadpanned and Connor held his hands up in surrender as Dante grinned.
“The information Chris got for me could be useful for Liam. But there was one thing that I wanted to warn you about before I give it to you.” I stared at her, the tension in her eyes and the nerves in Connors.
So she had told him already. Another car pulled up and I glanced at it, seeing the plates that indicated it was a government car.
“What is it, Elsie?” I said as the door opened. She bit her lip before sighing.
“It is the lead detective who is on this case. The gang comes from Hellier Beach, and they are known as Satan’s Serpents there. But here, they are creating a new faction and go by the name of Satan’s Hydras.” She said and Kenji hummed.
“That explains the hydra tattoo.” He said softly as I heard the soft sound of a woman talking. That voice sounded familiar.
“Who is the lead detective?” I asked as I turned to look at the source of that voice and froze.
“The lead detective is…” Elsie started as I stared at the woman who was no doubt the person Elsie was talking about.
“Clara.” We both said at the same time. As if sensing my eyes on her, she looked up at me, an unreadable expression on her face as she nodded at something Liam said.
“Oh fuck. This should be good.” Dante muttered as Alfie stepped towards me, putting a hand on my arm.
“Don’t lose your head, boss man.” He whispered and I glared at him as Clara walked over to us. Fucking Clara. I knew she was still out there somewhere, but I didn’t realize she was so close.
Hells Beach as it was known by the locals, was only a few hour's drive from Sinners Bay and a known hotspot for surfers around the world.
Clara smiled as she stopped in front of me and I tensed, the past coming back to haunt me.
“Benji. How lovely to see you.” She purred.
“I wish I could say the same, Clara. Why are you here?” I said and she laughed, that sound had once been my favorite sound and now it was like nails on a chalkboard.
“Come now, Benji. I am a detective. I have been working on the Serpent case for the last few years. I was reassigned to Hellier Beach after…” She paused and smiled as if it were a little secret between us.
“You mean after you betrayed me and were the cause of my parent's death?” I spat and she sighed.
“Look. I am here to do my job. I never meant to hurt you, I did have feelings for you, Benji. My partner at the time saw it and knew I had been compromised. They moved the timeline up and things got too chaotic.” She said and I heard the disgust in Connor’s voice as he muttered under his breath.
Her eyes left mine and I stiffened when she looked at Elsie. She looked her over and I didn’t like the interest that bloomed in her eyes.
“Who are you?” Clara said and I shifted to put myself in front of Elsie but my little Vixen was having none of that. She shoved me aside, leaning closer to Clara with the sweetest smile, her eyes full of venom.
“I am the woman who healed the wounds you left on this man and his family. I am the woman who wants to rip out your heart from your chest and lay it atBenjamin’sfeet.” She emphasized my name, knowing I hated Benji, and gathered the reason why.
“I am the woman who will burn down your entire world if you think you can stand there and act like you aren’t a viper in disguise. I am his wife.” She said softly before wrapping her arm around mine.
Dante chuckled as Kenji whistled low with amusement. Connor stepped up to Elsie’s other side, wrapping his arm around her waist.
Clara looked between us all, putting it all together as Declan came out of the house, a look of determination in his eyes.
“I can see we aren’t going to get along well. May I remind you that I am an officer and I am well aware of what it is that you all do? Don’t push me or I will have you all arrested.” She spat and Alejandro laughed as the others rolled their eyes.
“Did I just hear you threaten the victims with arrest?” Liam said from behind her and she spun around with a glare.
“You and I both know they aren’t victims, Liam.” She said and he shrugged.
“This here is a crime scene and they are the owners of this property. We have footage that shows it was a known associate of the Hydra’s dropping the body off early this morning. That clears them of any suspicion. You are here only as a courtesy to your department to collaborate on the Satan’s Serpent case. Don’t push your luck or I will have you removed from my jurisdiction.” Liam said calmly and Clara rolled her eyes.
