“This is going to be so fun.” She pulled me in, headed straight for the bar area, and placed orders for two gin and tonics.

We had just gotten our drinks when I felt a presence come up beside me. When I turned to my left, I came face to face with a pair of brown eyes.

“Hello there, gorgeous.” The guy leaned in toward me, and I could smell the scent of cigarettes on him. Instantly, I was reminded of my pappy, who smoked two packs a day. Pappy also had rotting teeth and picked his ear wax at the dinner table.

“Hey,” I smiled at him.

“You look ravishing tonight.” His eyes shamelessly went to my cleavage, which was on full display. “Maybe we can get out of here for a bit and head to my place to get to know each other better.”

I opened my mouth to speak, but Lena beat me to it.

“Seriously? That is what you are coming with.” She scoffed, pulling me closer to her. “I think the kind of woman you are looking for is down a few blocks working the corner.”

The guy frowned. “As you can see, we are talking here. So why don’t you mind your own business and leave us be.” The guy placed his hand over mine, and I kid you not; my whole body shuddered at his touch.

I tried to remove my hand from his, but he held me tightly.

“Asshole, let her go,” Selena growled. Her eyes blazed with a fury I had only seen when she was ready to pounce on her victim.

“What are you going to do about it, bitch?”

One moment the guy was standing there, and the next moment, a fist connected with his face, and he was on the ground groaning in pain.

With wide eyes, I turned to look to the side and found Nathaniel leering over the guy with an angry-looking Xander behind him.

“The lady said to let go, dipshit.” Nate’s voice was laced with venom so potent I could taste its bitterness on my tongue. His fists were balled at his side, and his eyes blazed with the fury of a thousand suns. The anger rolled off of him in waves. It was hard not to feel the heat radiating from him.

Nate picked the guy up and held him from the back of his shirt. “Apologize to the lady.”

The guy frowned at me before he tried to have a go at Nate, but that was a dumb idea. Nate ducked his strikes and pressed his face against the wooden bar. He pulled his arm behind him and twisted until the guy screamed in agony.

“Nate, come on,” the bartender, who had just served us our drinks, said. “Don’t get blood on my bar.”

“Got it, Vic.” Nate raised the guy so he was looking at me but was still subdued in Nate’s hold. “Apologize. Now.”

Nate pulled his arm even more.

“Ow! Okay! Okay!” The guy said in agony. “I’m sorry, okay? Happy?”

Nate looked at me for confirmation, to which I just gave a curt nod, completely stunned by what was playing out before me.

“You’re lucky she said okay. Otherwise, I was going to break your front teeth and nose. If I ever catch you harassing any other woman in this city, I will fucking break your wrists. Understand?”

Nate pulled on the guy's arm again, and he yelped and nodded.

“Now get out of here.”

He let the guy go before he was escorted out by one of the larger-looking guys at the door when we got in. He was likely security.

Nate watched until the guy was out of sight before he turned to me with an unreadable expression.

“You good?” His green eyes searched my face. “Did he hurt you?”

Was he…caring?

The same man who had told me to go and fuck myself had defended me against a misogynistic prick. What a strange turn of events.

“No,” I spoke against the thick emotion layer lodged in my throat. “Thank you.”
