This was meant to be a fun night out. Now we were playing drinking games with the hot broody fireman who viewed me like the bane of his existence.

He vexed me. So, so very much.

Selena and I were on one side of the high table, and they were on the other. Nathaniel hadn’t looked at me since we settled into our seats, and I could sense he was uncomfortable.

Clenched jaw. Tight shoulders. Hard-set eyes were cast onto the table.

It was ridiculous just how observant I was when it came to him.

“Right, kids. We all know the name of the game. You are asked a question. If you choose not to answer, you drink. Suppose you answer that you don’t drink. We keep asking ‘til everyone has taken all four of their shots,” Xander explained, and I just felt my whole stomach twist. I had promised to take myself out of my comfort zone, but this was…beyond.

Could I get drunk in front of Nathaniel? But the bigger question here was, why did I care? This was meant to be my “living for me” era. I should not put anyone else’s view of me before my own.

I stared down at the colorless liquids.

Here we go.

“Firecracker?” Xander looked at Lena. “You ready.”

“Do your worst incubator.” She threw him a smirk.

“How many people have you slept with?”

She gave him an incredulous gaze, to which he shrugged. “You are so boring. But anyway, I have slept with no man my entire life.”

My neck snapped to her. Okay, that was a blatant lie.

“I don’t believe you,” Xander said what we were all thinking. “You are telling me that you are a virgin?”

“No, I am not.”

“But you just said that—”

“You asked how many men I had slept with, and I told you none because I have never actually fallen asleep with a man. But if you had asked me how many men I have had sex with, I would have told you a few.”

Smart girl.

“My turn,” Selena smiled and turned her sights on Nate. “Mr. Brooding, time for you to answer. I will start you off easy. When was the last time you got laid?”

Nathaniel glared at Selena, and I could feel his coolness radiating. This man was either icy cold or fiery hot. There was no in-between with him.

He took his shot glass and downed it like it didn’t even burn his throat.

“Right, bud, it’s your turn.” Xander patted his best friend on the back. “You get to ask Lia the question.”

Slowly, he flicked his gaze to me, and my breath caught in my throat.

“Would you ever hook up with Xander?”

Xander sputtered out the drink he had been sipping, and Selena looked at Nathaniel with amusement.

My mouth hung open before I remembered everyone was looking at me and waiting for an answer. “No, I would not hook up with Xander. We are friends.”

“You were friends with my brother, but then you hooked up with him.”

I didn’t expect that to hit me as hard as it did, but I felt it. Not all the way deep, but the hit was enough to leave me feeling some way.

“I made love to him. There is a difference.”
