He scoffed.

“Something funny?” I asked.

Nathaniel leaned back in his chair, his broad shoulders flexing slightly as he set his sights on me. “How many men have you been with after my brother?”

“It’s not your turn to ask a question.”

“It’s zero, right?” He continued. “It’s zero because no man would be dumb enough to touch you with a fifty-foot pole. It’s a wonder how my brother survived six years with you. God knows it would have driven me to insanity.”

His words stung—this time, they hit harder.

“What is your issue with me?” I stood from my chair. “Ever since I got here, you have been nothing but a total ass to me. What have I done to you that warrants your shitty ass behavior? Is it about Jacob? Because if it is, I can assure you the man ended it with me. I wanted him to stay, but he wanted out.”

I stared at the gorgeous man wanting him to say something. Anything at all. But instead, I got silence and a nasty glare.

“I need some air. Don’t follow Lena.”

I walked away from the table before anyone could stop me. The sting behind my eyes intensified, and I felt like I had gone back seven months. The heaviness in my chest just wouldn’t let up.

As I exited the door to the cool Chicago breeze, I let out a heavy sigh. I leaned against the wall and looked at the dark sky without a star.

There were very few things I missed about Braven Bay, but one of the things I did miss was the starlit skies. There was too much light pollution in the city for me to see them here.

I heard the door open, half expecting to find Selena, but I was met with an angry Nathaniel. His nostrils were flared, and his chest heaved up and down like a caveman.

“What do you want now?” I spat. “I’m pretty sure you have said all you needed to say for today.”

He stormed over to me, and I would be lying if I said his heated gaze didn’t cause a shudder to run down my spine.

“What are you doing here?”

“What?”

“In this city. In my city. What are you doing here? One minute I am living my life, and the next, you are here fucking shit up for me all over again?” He ran a frustrated hand through his hair.

“You are not making any sense at all. What do you mean I’m fucking shit up for you all over again? I don’t even know you. You understand that. I met you ten times in all six years I dated your brother, and you didn’t talk to me even then.”

He paced around, looking more and more frustrated. “I knew you!”

I stopped, completely stunned. “How?”

He just stared at me with a blank expression on his face.

“It doesn’t matter.”

I was tired of his constant hot and cold that drove my head crazy. He could never just pick a damn side.

I stepped toward him and stabbed him with my finger.

“It doesn’t matter? You act as if you hate me, and then the next second, you are coming in like a superhero. It all matters because of what you are doing to me! Messing with my head with all this confusion. Why don’t you like me? What is your issue with me?”

We were practically in each other's faces now. Neither one of us wanted to bend for the other. I had been the one to yield every additional time, but not today. I would not let this one go. I was going to stand firm and stand up for myself.

“You want to know what my issue with you is?”

“Yes!”

“You're standing here breathing, and she isn’t!”
