One brother had already scarred my heart. Why would I put myself in the line of fire again, only to be destroyed by the same bloodline?

“Why did you kiss me?” I filled the silence with my voice.

I watched his features harden.

“You have acted nothing but mean and cold toward me from the moment I met you. Yet you punched a guy harassing me, and then you kissed me a few hours later. It doesn’t make sense to me. We live in the same building, and Xander and I are friends, and likely our paths will cross. So, for the sake of peace, I want to squash whatever issues between us. I won’t ask about what you said that night. But I want to know why you kissed me?”

He stood there still as stone, not answering me as I had expected him to. But when I thought he would do nothing but stand there and say nothing, he opened his mouth.

“I didn’t know I was doing it until I did it,” he said. “It was a mistake on my part. I am sorry for crossing the line with you like that. It won’t happen again.”

I let out a sharp breath. I don’t know why the word ‘mistake’ stung more than I thought it would.

“Okay.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Can we call a truce now? I moved here to avoid all the drama and the stress, not to get involved in more.”

I held out my hand for him to shake. He looked at it for a few seconds before taking my hand.

“Truce,” he agreed.

Those familiar sparks that had pricked my skin that day returned. I quickly ripped my hand from his and took a small step back.

“I should get ready for my client.”

“Client?”

“A first-time mom. She’s bringing her baby girl in for a photo shoot.”

“You’re a photographer?”

I nodded. “Yep. It started more as a passion project, and I discovered I could profit from it. So I monetized my passion. I strictly do newborns and pregnant women, but I think I could expand further.”

“Why them specifically?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ve kind of just had an affinity for babies and pregnancy. I like the idea of new life and new hope. It’s stupid, I know, but it’s—”

“It’s not stupid,” he interrupted me.

My heart jumped.

Something passed between us within those few seconds, and we stared at each other. The air buzzed with something electric. But as soon as that moment came, it was interrupted by the blaring of his phone.

I jumped a little, and he dug his phone out of his pocket.

“I better take this.” He started for the door. With his hand on the knob, he paused before he turned back to look at me with a hint of warmth in his eyes that I didn’t see there before. “See you around, Amelia.”

“Bye.”

And with that, he left me with many emotions and a wetness that I was becoming too accustomed to between my legs.

Great.

NATHANIEL

The girl was in my head. Amelia had me in this vice that I could not get out of.

I shouldn’t have kissed her, but I did. I shouldn’t have allowed myself to get close to her, but I did.
