Come on, Nate. Give in. Allow yourself a taste of the forbidden fruit just one more time.

“Nate…”

I could not stay strong and away from this beautiful creature much longer.

Just then, someone pulls open the curtain.

“Amelia Rose, what were you thinking going to—oh, Nathaniel? What are you doing here?”

I jumped away from Amelia like she had caught fire.

Déjà freaking vu.

It had happened yet again. Except this time, it was Selena who had come to stop whatever would have transpired between the two of us.

“I was just seeing if Amelia was okay.”

Her eye shifted between me and her best friend. She didn’t even bother to smother that knowing grin from her face.

“I see.”

“I should get going. They need me at the station.” I gave them a curt nod before leaving the room and going to the parking lot.

That was twice now that I had fallen into this situation with Amelia.Or was it three? First, she abruptly ran. Then, twice we’ve been interrupted.

I couldn’t help but notice the tiny flicker of disappointment that gnawed at me. If only her friend had come thirty seconds later, would I have finally kissed her again? I shook my head, trying to rid myself of these obscene thoughts.

I couldn’t want Amelia. She was a no-go area for me. I needed to keep my senses when it came to her. But the annoying thing was that Amelia could break down your walls without even trying. So, it then begged the question, why even bother building a barrier if she would tear it down?

AMELIA

Christmas was just around the corner, and I had spent the first part of the festive season cooped up in my apartment.

After the hospital, Selena interrogated me like I was Pablo Escobar. She called my bullshit repeatedly when I told her nothing was happening between me and Nathaniel. But the more I refuted her, the less I believed it myself. There was something there between the two of us. There had always been something there from the moment I saw him the day I moved in.

It was something so raw and untamed. It was carnal in its nature and unpredictable. Usually, all those things would have scared me, but they did nothing but excite me.

That was what Nathaniel did to me. He excited me. Maybe it was his dominating aura, but something about him pulled me toward him. It was like a siren call that only our two hearts could hear.

Suppose he had consumed me before he had now officially undone me. The man was there when I closed my eyes and the first thought when I woke up. I had tried to chase down orgasm after orgasm, but I was sourly disappointed whenever I got close to my release. I couldn’t even pleasure myself in peace anymore.

The thunder roared, shaking my glass window. I jumped back, clutching my coffee mug in my hand.

A storm was coming in, meaning I lived with level nine anxiety. I had cuddled up on my bed with tea and some Netflix on my laptop. But even that wasn’t helping me to calm my nerves.

I didn’t like these storms. Usually, I would take some melatonin and sleep through it, but I was out of the sleep aid and was not about to go out into the pouring rain to get more.

The thunder roared again, and I whimpered a little, trying to calm my racing heart. No matter how many years had passed, my mind still took me back to that night. The only thing I remember was talking to my mom about what theme I wanted my birthday to be and then black. The sound of glass shattering and metal colliding will forever be engraved in my brain.

I had “Stranger Things” playing in the background, but that didn’t even help.

My phone buzzed on my side table. It was probably Selena checking in. But when I swiped on the screen, I realized it was not Selena.

Nathaniel Cane: open the door.

I read it over three times to ensure I didn’t see things. But that was him.
