“Why the sudden change of heart?”

“She’s the one.” He reached inside his back pocket and took out a small box. He opened it, and my blood stilled.

“Mom’s ring.” My voice was locked in my throat. “Dad gave it to you?”

“Yes.” There was a slight smile on his face. “Do you think she will like it?”

I bit down on my tongue. The bitter taste pulled into my mouth, further souring my mood.

He wanted to marry her.

“I don’t think you should ask her to marry you.”

“Why?” His eyebrows pulled together. “I know I messed up, but we have been together for years, and there is love there. Hell, she moved to a different state to escape me. I know she still cares.”

But did she?

I had wanted to ask her about it but had yet to get around to it.

The truth of the matter was that I was jealous. Jealous of his connection with her and jealous that he had a piece of her heart. I had yet to learn where I stood with her. Our agreement had been set, and we knew the terms and the conditions I had put in motion.

“I thought you said you needed more. Is she suddenly enough for you?”

His frown deepened. “What is up your ass? I was wrong before. Now I know what I want, and it’s her.”

“Are you sure?”

“What is your issue with me, Nathaniel?” he scowled. “I know her far better than you do.”

“Do you?” I had never wanted to punch my brother more than I did then. “Do you even know where she is? Where she lives? How has she been doing?”

“I know she is in the city and will contact her. I just needed to get my shit together first.”

“So you don’t have a real plan. You’re just going to show up at her doorstep with a ring in hand and a question you aren’t even sure she will say yes to.”

“She’ll say yes.”

“How do you know?” I fired back at him.

I was doing a piss poor job of hiding my irritation, but I was never good at faking things anyway. He was moving in on what was mine.

Why did he have to come now?

“She isn’t some yo-yo that you can play with. You can’t dump her and suddenly decide you want her again.”

“That’s why I’m here with this.” He raised the ring in the air.

“And you think that will fix it all? Do you think you are magically putting it on her finger will make her want you again? What if she’s moved on?”

“She wouldn’t have. It hasn’t even been a full year since the breakup. There is no way that she has forgotten about me.”

“Hmm,” was all I said to him.

The mother fucker was so overly confident that it annoyed me. Who was he to say that she hadn’t moved on? He didn’t have a permanent place in her heart. She wouldn’t have allowed me to touch her if she hadn't moved on. She wouldn’t have allowed me to make love to her the way I did the other day.

“Whatever.” he got up from his seat. “I wanted to come here and see you, but as usual, you are acting like a complete and utter asshole. I won’t bother sending you an invite to the damn wedding.”

“There won’t be a wedding.” I should have kept my mouth shut, but he kept talking, which annoyed me now.
