I watched his body go visibly tense. He took one long look at me, and maybe it was the look on my face that said it all, but realization dawned on his features.

“You mother fucker!” The venom in his tone coated his words. “When?”

It didn’t take a genius to know what he was asking about. But I kept my mouth shut.

His nostrils flared, and his fists balled at his side. “Where is she?”

“You don’t need to know that.” I slowly stood to my feet.

“How long have you been fucking her?’ This time his voice raised an octave. “What? Cat got your tongue, brother?”

I looked him dead in the eye. “I think it’s best you leave.”

“I’m not going anywhere until you give me some answers.”

We stared at each other, neither wanting to back down. My brother and I were never close, but we had never looked at each other with this much resentment and anger all because of the woman who had stolen our hearts.

“I don’t owe you anything.”

“The hell you don’t!” He roared with the fury of a thousand lions. “You have been sleeping with my girlfriend behind my back.”

“She isn’t yours.”

“Neither is she yours,” he said. “How can she be after what happened all those years ago?”

My body went rigid. “That was in the past.”I never told Jacob of the connection to Amelia and our family. My father must have told him.

“Really? Because last I heard, you hated her because you thought she killed Mom. So suddenly, that’s changed? You finally forgave her for something she never did.”

“That is none of your concern.”

He paused for a second. I could see the wheels turning in his head. “You haven’t told her.”

I stayed quiet, which was enough of an answer for him.

He let out a humorless laugh, “You are one sick bastard. You want to be with her, yet you haven’t told her about that night. The night that changed the entire trajectory of her life.”

“I will…eventually.”

I was going to tell her the truth of the matter that I was scared. I was scared I could lose her and wouldn’t have her anymore.

“How can you hide that you were the car she and her mother crashed into that night? Does she know how much you wished her dead? The number of times you prayed that her life would be taken instead of mom’s.”

I remembered everything, and I resented myself for it. She never deserved that from me, and it took me falling in love with her to see that.

“I’m going to tell her.” I didn’t know if I was telling him or myself. For weeks I had been putting it off.

“Liar. You will continue to brush shit under the rug and will it all away the same way you handle everything else. You hide in this city away from Dad like he doesn’t mean shit to you. Do you know how messed up that is?”

“Don’t act like Dad didn’t blame me for Mom’s death.”

His eyes narrowed. “He was grieving. He said things he didn’t mean, and he said he was sorry. But you’re the one who can’t get over it enough to see that he loves you. Do you even know he’s sick?”

My heart stopped. “What?”

“It’s why he wanted you home for Thanksgiving. It’s why he’s been trying to get you home for the past three years. But you ran away to the military so you wouldn’t have to deal with the pain. Or deal with your internal hatred.”

I had enough. I didn’t need to hear this, least of all from him.
