“Get out.”

He huffed, his eyes still locked on me. “Gladly.”

He turned and stormed toward the door, ripping it open.

Shit.

Standing there on the other side of the door was Amelia. Her eyes were wide and red. She had heard us arguing on the other side, and she had been crying. Her eyes shifted from me to my brother and then back again.

“Amelia…” I moved toward her, but she shook her head, taking a few steps back.

It was clear in her eyes to see that she knew. The hurt in her eyes was my undoing. I couldn't help the pain that pooled into my chest seeing her look so…lost.

“I need some air.” She turned and charged down the hall.

My brother chased after her, but I stood rooted in my spot, unable to move. I should have gone after her. I should have run after and gone on my knees begging her for forgiveness, but I did none of those things. I just stood there at a complete loss.

A foreign sting behind my eyes began to build, and my vision blurred ever so slightly. My chest squeezed, the pressure on my walls tightening.

I could feel myself collapsing and my life crumbling, but I could do nothing to stop it. All I could do was breathe through it and hoped that after all the walls had fallen, something would be left in the wreckage to salvage.

AMELIA

I could not believe what I had heard. My entire world tilted on its axis as all the dots started connecting.

I only had snippets from that night. Little scenes where I noticed a prominent figure that had pulled me out of the wreckage. For years I had fought with my memories to try to remember him. Now, low and behold, it was him.

The man who had saved me and given me a second chance at life. The same man that I had fallen in love with.

“Amelia…” his voice didn’t even sound like his.

My eyes moved to meet his. For months I had stared into those mesmerizing orbs, entirely and utterly encapsulated with their beauty. But here I stood, looking into the eyes of a stranger.

I shook my head, not fully believing what I had just heard. “I need some air.”

I turned and bolted down the hallways toward the staircase. I heard my name being called, but I didn’t stop to figure out which brother it was.

He had been in the other car.

That night, it connected us—this tragedy where we had lost the most important people in our lives.

His coldness and resentment all made sense now. It was why had he done all he could to not be around me when I was dating his brother. I was a reminder of the night he had lost it all. I had survived, and his mother had not.

Someone called after me again, but I didn’t dare to look back. I just kept running until I made it to the stairs. I had only broken out onto the foyer when a hand came over my wrist.

“Lia, wait.”

I tried to pull my hand out of Jacob’s grasp, but it was like iron. There was no way he was letting me go. I whirled around and glared at him.

“Please just leave me, Jacob. I don’t want to talk right now.” I ripped my wrist out of his hold.

This was the first time I was seeing him in months. I had expected to feel that familiar pang of hurt that had been evident when I first got here, but there was nothing. I felt nothing at all.

All this time, he had known about the accident. I had cried in his arms as I tried to remember that night. I only had little snippets of that night, and when I finally woke up from my coma, I was told my mother had died.

Had he known the truth?
