I beam at him and then slide my arm through his. I donotnotice his bulging tattooed muscles or the way he smells like soap. My nostrils are sealed off. Like vaults. I will not sniff. I’m not an animal.

“Let’s go.”

We drive across town toward his parents’ house, and I bounce in my seat in his low-rider muscle car. It’s making my dick all excited. Or maybe that’s the gasoline smell I’m inhaling. Could be getting high. Don’t know.

“This is a very cool car,” I say, and Tomas peeks over at me.

“I built it from the ground up.”

“Of course you did. You, my good man, are a genius.”

He smiles at me and then revs the engine. The rumble of it makes me squeal, and I hold on as he accelerates down the road. It’s like riding a rollercoaster with a big sexy man at the stern. Heave ho, here I go.

Sadly, we don’t go far before he comes to a stop in front of a farmhouse with a white picket fence and a barn on the side.

“Oh my god. Pinch me. Your family has a barn.”

“We have cows too.”

I gasp. “I’ve met cows before. Winnie the Moo huffed on me and then pooped right after.”

Tomas laughs as he puts the car in park and then steps out, moving around to my side before I have a chance to get out, and opens the door for me.

“Such a gentleman. You’re spoiling me. How am I ever going to go back home where men just wander off when we arrive at destinations? The horror.”

He chuckles and then places his hands in his pockets.

“You deserve a man who will open doors for you.”

Talk about swoon. I swear, I have the worst of luck. The man of my dreams stands before me, and I can’t have him.

“Alright. Well, beware. My mom can be overbearing, my dad is really slow, my brother is a dick, and my sisters….”

Just as he says it, his mother walks out, shouting at Tomas and waving a dishtowel in the air.

“My son! He hath forsaken me!”

Tomas rolls his eyes and sighs. “Just so you know, I just saw her last week.”

“Well, apparently that’s not enough,” I murmur with a hint of a smile.

He eyes me, and I slide my arm through his once more, pulling him toward the house. Even now, I can feel how homey this place is. It’s nothing like my parents’—awkward and slightly cold.

After that phone call, I should visit them, but I don’t really have the motivation. I haven’t been excited to see my parents in eons. But I am excited to see Tomas’s. I am so damn excited.

“Oh, fuck me. Here it comes,” Tomas murmurs as we make our way up the front porch.

“My son!” his mother says dramatically. “You’ve finally come home.”

“Mom. I was home last week.”

She huffs and then pulls away and glances at me. “Yes, well not soon enough. And who’s this?”

I lift my hand and waggle my fingers. “Hello. I’m Damon. A friend of Tomas’s.”

His mother eyes me and then claps her hands. “Oh. Well. I’m so happy to have you here. Why haven’t you ever brought him home before?” she asks Tomas.

“We just met, Mom.”
