“Well, thank you for being a customer,” I tell him and then sip on my wine once more. “Seems I’ll have to take you out to dinner one night as a thank you.”

Tomas blushes and then looks away. “Yeah, seems so.”

I let the topic die. “Alright, what do you want to watch? A horror movie? Or something sexy?”

“Horror,” he says as I turn on the TV. Wonton has his head resting on the couch, his eyes intent on my bowl of uneaten pasta. Quickly, I lift it up and cradle it to my chest, scooting closer to Tomas.

“Shoo, mutt. Shoo.”

Peanut only clambers onto the couch next to me, taking up far too much space and nearly placing me on top of Tomas while he does it.

“Down,” I command, but it only brings Wonton and Nibblet onto the couch as well. Tomas chuckles and then scoots over, pulling me into his side. And I don’t protest. No, I just sink into his warmth and put on a horror flick, sipping wine and picking at my food until the credits roll. I’ve dozed slightly, my head pressed against Tomas’s shoulder, my knees tucked up on his thighs.

“Sorry, I really wanted to do those face masks,” I say with a yawn, pulling my legs off of his and stretching them out before me. The dogs are all snoring next to me, but stir when I start speaking.

“It’s okay. I think you need to go to bed. We can do all that later.”

“Ugh, I guess so,” I reply and then stand up, stretching my arms above my head and yawning once more. Tomas’s eyes flick to my bare midriff and then he looks away as I drop my arms.

“You work tomorrow?” I ask.

“No, Monday is my day off. You?”

I shrug. “I mean, yeah, in the afternoon. I have a solo live show and then I have to contact some guys about setting up collaborations.”

Tomas stands up and nods, swallowing. “Alright, well before all that, you want to go for a cruise tomorrow?”

My heart thunders in my chest. “Oh, yes I do. Should I pack snacks? I can make a mean charcuterie board.”

Tomas nods. “Yeah, sure. We can eat at a pretty spot up in the hills.”

“Oh, a secret spot. That calls for brie cheese.”

Tomas smiles at me, probably thinking that I’m a loon, but I don’t care. I am ready for all the things. All the things with him.

“Yeah, sounds like a plan.”

Yeah, it sure fucking does.

“Damn, you weren’t joking about this,” Tomas says when I show up mid-morning to his place, a large cooler dangling from my hand.

“I do not mess around with charcuterie boards. Nor do I mess around with wine. You will have all the delicious things when we stop for a snack.”

“You make it seem like we’re going for an all-day trip.”

“Listen, Tomas. You do not want to see me hangry. It’s not pretty.”

He chuckles at that and then opens the passenger side door to his low-rider truck. I slide in and listen to the rumble of the car beneath me when he starts it up.

“So, what does cruising entail?” I ask, buckling in and turning to face Tomas who is pulling out of the driveway.

“Just cruising. Looking at the scenery. Listening to music. Just hanging.”

“Oh, I can totally hang.”

And hang I do—on every word and movement Tomas makes. This little crush I have on him is getting a bit out of hand. But I let myself just enjoy it, not letting myself fret over tomorrow. We have beautiful desert scenery all around us, I’m in a sexy car, and we have cheese.
