Michelle Thomas. April 20.

The date of the fire.

“Wow.” She sucked in a lungful of air. “I think I found the connection.” She explained her discovery in one sentence.

“I’d say you’re on to something. Meaning the other letters and numbers may also be cases, which could suggest he thought they were somehow linked.”

“That’s my take too.”

“In light of this development, why don’t I pick you up and we’ll both meet with the victim’s father? I promised I’d be available to assist if any new evidence came to light with the Kavanaugh case, and this qualifies.”

Bri hesitated, but only for a moment. Interacting with an ATF agent in the line of duty didn’t break any of her rules.

Even if the man in question had temptation written all over him.

“If you can spare the time, I wouldn’t mind having company during the conversation. Two heads and all that.”

“Where are you?”

She gave him the location. “I can call the towing service while I wait for you.”

“Sounds like a plan. Expect me in less than twenty minutes. Are you carrying?”

“Yes.” Curious he would ask, since most fire investigators didn’t. “Why?”

“You can’t be too careful these days, and being stuck on the side of a highway in that area isn’t the safest place to be.”

He was worried about her?

A surge of warmth filled her heart. Since Mom and Dad had passed on, no one but Jack and Cara had ever expressed any concern about her well-being.

“I’ll be fine. I’m more than capable of taking care of myself.”

“I have no doubt of that. You have a weapon, and I know you’ll keep the doors locked. See you in a few minutes.”

He ended the call, and Bri slowly lowered the cell. Locked the doors as cars and trucks continued to whiz by.

Strange how this had worked out.

A call placed by mistake minutes after she’d fought off the urge to call him, leading to a joint visit to James Wallace that could give her a clue or two to follow in Les Kavanaugh’s case.

Fate ... or something more?

Mom, of course, would have said something more. She’d been a firm believer that everything happened for a reason, even if that reason was known to God alone.

So if that was true, what was the reason behind this?

And where was it about to lead?

BRI WAS WAITING INSIDE HERCARwhen Marc pulled onto the shoulder behind her, but as he braked she opened the passenger door and climbed out.

He met her by his hood. “Did you connect with a towing service?”

“Yes. I duct-taped my key in the wheel well for them.” She motioned toward the front tire.

“You keep duct tape in your car?” He hitched up one side of his mouth while he edged around her to view the damage.
