“Doesn’t everyone?”

His kind of woman.

He gave the tires a quick look.

Both were flat as the proverbial pancake.

Very strange.

“Have you made someone mad recently?”

Her eyebrows rose. “You think this was deliberate?”

“Two flat tires is unusual.”

“I know, but it could happen.”

True. Yet it wasn’t leaving him with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

“Anyone come to mind who might want to mess with your life?”

Her forehead puckered. “If you’re asking whether I have any enemies, everyone in law enforcement does. I’m sure you know that. I haven’t been back in this area long, but I imagine the arsonists I’ve identified aren’t too happy with me.”

“Anyone in particular? Any threats?”

“No to both.”

“Have there been other incidents like this?”

“No. I do appreciate your concern, but I think this was a fluke. You ready to listen to James Wallace’s story?”

She thought he was overreacting—and overstepping.

Maybe he was.

But as he’d told her, he listened to his instincts, as she did. And right now they were pinging with negativity.

Nevertheless, he followed her lead.

“Yes.” He moved to the passenger door of his car and opened it for her, earning him another eyebrow hike.

“That’s not a courtesy much in evidence in today’s world.” She skirted around him and slid into the car.

“My grandmother gets the credit for my chivalry. She taught me old-school etiquette.”

“Kudos to her. The world could use more courtesy and civility.”

“Thanks for that. Not all women have been receptive to my attempts to be polite. Some view it as patronizing.”

“Good manners have been a casualty in our politically correct society.”

“Amen to that.” He shut the door, circled the car, and took his place behind the wheel. “If you’ll give me the address, I’ll get directions.” He pulled out his phone.

“No need. I’m familiar with the area. You’ll want to continue on I-64 west.”

“Got it.” He eased back into traffic and picked up speed. “Why don’t you fill me in on the gist of your conversation with Mr. Wallace?”

He listened as she recounted their exchange and passed on the news about the clock.
