Iwas just getting my things from my locker, ready to wait for Lars on the bleachers like a dutiful captive when his shadow blocked out everything around me. When I looked over at him, he was already dressed out for football practice, though he didn’t have his helmet with him.

After a heartbeat of silence, I asked, “What?”

“I heard that you agreed to go to T.J. Harlow’s party tonight,” he said, and I just wanted to shake my head.

“So what?”

His dark brows shot upward. “So what?”

I nodded. “Yeah, so what?”

His hazel eyes glowed with irritation, and I hated how my first reaction was to notice how hot Lars Finley really was. Nevertheless, gorgeous or not, I was not going to let him run roughshod over me just because he felt some misplaced sense of responsibility towards me.

“You didn’t think to tell me?”

I shut my locker, then turned to face him. “Why do you need to know?” I posed, and his left eye immediately began to twitch. “Calliope’s giving me a ride, so I didn’t see the need to tell you.”

“If you’re going to that party, then I’m taking you,” he stated, and it was my own fault for feeling too hopeful these past couple of days.

“I don’t need you to take me,” I repeated. “If you want to use the car, then I don’t care, but I’m riding with Calliope.”

For whatever reason, Lars only used my car when he was driving me around. Even though I’d given him leave to use it whenever he wanted to, he always borrowed one of his parents’ cars if he needed to go somewhere or whatever. Honestly, I didn’t know what his hangup was about using my car, but it wasn’t a topic that I wanted to argue about. Apparently, we had enough things to argue about.

“You are not riding with Calliope,” he argued. “There’s absolutely no reason why I can’t drive you to and from the party, Edie.”

The words were out before I could snatch them back. “Are you sure that Yuki will be okay with me tagging along?”

I knew that I sounded jealous, and I also knew that I had no right to feelanykind of way about Lars and the girls that he messed with. However, I wasn’t going to take his hypocrisy lying down. I wasn’t going to let him rob me of someone to hang out with while he got his fill of whoever he chose. With Talon’s blessing, I was finally going to be able to have something special with someone, and I wasn’t going to let Lars ruin that for me.

Lars took two steps towards me, forcing my back up against the lockers. He looked pissed, and his left eye was still twitching, but I wasn’t going to cower. “Let’s get something straight here, Edie,” he growled down at me. “I give two fucks about Yuki Makor or any other girl in this fucking school.” It was sad that I believed him. For all that these girls got a thrill from Lars’ attention, I believed that he couldn’t care less about any of them. Talon and Hunter had been the same way. “So, don’t bring that shit up again.”

I cocked my head. “Then you’re admitting that you’re only going to T.J.’s party to babysit me?”

“I’m going to drink and have a good time,” he lied. “I’m going to hang out and just enjoy the night.”

I arched a brow. “Since when is it an enjoyable night for you if you don’t have a girl wrapped around you?”

“Since now,” he hissed.

Instead of arguing a pointless subject with him, I said, “I’m going to the party with Calliope, and you can’t stop me.”

After a few seconds of silence, Lars let out a heavy sigh. “Edie, I’m trying here,” he lied again. “I’m really, really, really trying here. Give me a fucking break, will you?”

“I know that Talon told you that it was okay for me to date,” I replied. “What’s the big deal?”

“Dating is fine,” he said, the lies just rolling off his tongue. “It’s the partying and hooking up that I have a problem with.”

“Oh, so you can do it, but I can’t?”

His left eye started twitching again before he blew me away by saying, “Yes.”

“Oh, really?” I scoffed.

Shaking my head, I stepped to the side to get away from him before I knocked him on his ass, but before I could make it two steps in, I felt Lars grab my arm, then push me back up against the lockers.

I should knee him in the nuts.

“It’s not the same thing, and you know it, Edie.”
