“All I know is that you are being the biggest asshole ever, Lars Finley,” I told him. “I don’t know what your problem is-”

“You are not like those other girls,” he spat, losing his temper.

“Here’s the thing about all those other girls,” I said, poking him in the chest. “No matter what you think of them, they are still someone’s sister, daughter, or friend. While you keep hounding me about being special, you don’t think that their fathers think thatthey’respecial? You don’t think that their brothers wished they’d find a guy that respects them? If you don’t care what their brothers and fathers think aboutyouusing them, then why should other guys care what you think about me?”

“Goddamn it, Edie-”

“No,” I snapped. “I am going to T.J.’s party with Calliope, and that’s final, Lars.” Now his jaw was ticking, too. “You can get mad all you want, but I am not going to let you ruin this for me.”

“I’m not trying to ruin anything,” he denied. “I’m just trying to look out for you, Edie.”

“By being a hypocritical, misogynistic, temperamental asshole?” I shot back.

“If that’s what it takes to make sure that you’re not taken advantage of, then, yes,” he said, not missing a beat or even denying everything that I had just accused him of being.

“You’re unbelievable, Finley,” I bit out, the jerk exhausting me to no end.

Then, out of nowhere, Lars lifted his hand, cupping the right side of my face, and I absolutely froze. “I’ll let you ride with Calliope,” he said, finally relenting. “However, the second that I see something that I don’t’ like, I’m hauling your ass out of there, Edie. I mean it.”

So much for trying to dress sexy for my first party ever.

“Jesus Christ, Finley!” Coach yelled. “It’s calledpracticefor a reason!”

“Seriously,” Alex Cramer grunted as he wrapped his arm around his ribs. “Are you trying to kill us, man?”

“Yeah, man,” Hector added. “You’re not even on the team to play, Finley.”

“Maybe he should be,” Dillon grinned as he slapped my back. “That’s some hard hitting you got going on there, man.”

“Yeah, what gives?” Tanner Portman asked. “Usually, you’re too busy flirting with the cheerleaders to care what we’re doing over here.”

I growled.

“Whoa, I’m just saying,” he quickly rushed out. “No need to get aggressive.”

“Goddamn it,” Coach grumbled. “Everyone get some water.”

“Dude, you should have let Yuki suck your dick during last break,” Hector remarked. “You seem stressed.”

“I’m not stressed,” I said after taking a healthy drink of water, welcoming the cramps later. “I’m irritated.”

“I’ve got news for you, Finley,” Alex drawled out. “A blowjob will help relieve either of those issues.”

While he wasn’t wrong, a blowjob-no matter how good-wasn’t going to fix my problems this time. I never should have touched Edie earlier. Yeah, there’d been a million times when I had held her hand, thrown my arm around her shoulders, or whatever, but touching her face like that had felt different, and she wasn’t at all wrong when she kept accusing me of being a hypocrite. For a week, I’d been walking around, warning everyone off her because of my loyalty to Talon, yet here I was, almost close to kissing her earlier.

What the actual fuck?

Luckily, I hadn’t been stupid enough to go through with it, and after allowing Edie to go to the party with Calliope, I’d gotten the hell away from her, taking my confusion and aggravation out on Lakeside’s football team. Besides, as long as I didn’t kill anyone, they could use with toughening up a little. Last year, they’d gotten their asses handed to them by Carter Prep, and who in the fuck wanted to get shown up by a bunch of privileged trust fund brats? Yeah, our quarterback had been out with an ankle sprain, but they still shouldn’t have lost by so much.

“Forget all those antidepressant medications with all those damn side-effects,” Tanner said. “A blowjob will get me un-depressed really quick.”

“How is it that they’re both the ailment and the cure?” Dillon muttered.

“What? The medications?”
