The confusion that worries us.

Edie~

Normally, setting up for the annual Marion Concert was one of the highlights of my day. I loved classical music, and most of the kids that put on the concert were wicked talented. It was a community event, and it was a big deal in Lakeside. In fact, in the past, there’d even been a few kids that had gone on to make music their careers. The Marion Concert had a great reputation for attracting opportunities for kids with musical talent, and it was something that I was proud to be a part of, even if it was just setting things up.

However, this morning, Calliope wouldn’t shut up about Lars, even though she didn’t know about the kiss. She’d been more interested in telling me how Lars had looked pissed to discover that I had taken off with Max, and she’d even gone on to tell me how surprised everyone had been that Max hadn’t gotten the crap beaten out of him for dragging me away. In fact, she hadn’t shut up so much that I’d been happy as hell to finally leave the rec center just so that I didn’t have to listen to her ramblings anymore.

Shuffling my way into the kitchen to make dinner, I still felt the weight of last night and this morning on my shoulders. Since I’d gotten no sleep last night, I had taken a nap after getting home earlier, and since I wasn’t much of a nap taker, I was feeling groggy and out of sorts a bit. Nevertheless, I was starving because I had napped right past lunch.

After shoving a frozen pizza in the oven, I pulled out my phone to dial Kenzlee. I had laid awake, staring at the ceiling last night, confused, hurt, and confused some more, and I knew that I couldn’t go on like that. Even if I could get through with only a few hours of sleep, restlessness caught up with you eventually, and I didn’t have time for that kind of stress.

Blessedly, Kenzlee answered on the second ring. “Hey, you.”

“Hey,” I replied, smiling at hearing her familiar voice.

“What’s going on?”

“Is my brother with you?”

“He’s actually out back on the phone with Hunter,” she chuckled. “Apparently, Alexandria’s giving Hunter some trouble.”

Sounded familiar.

“I kissed Lars last night,” I blurted out like a rookie.

“Uhm, what?”

“I kissed Lars last night,” I repeated. “Lars Finley.”

“Okay,” she drawled out carefully. “May I ask why?”

I let out a dramatic sigh. “We were at a party at T.J. Harlow’s, and we got into a huge fight because Max Halford had dared to show some interest in me.”

“How did that lead you to kissing Lars?”

“He dragged me out of the party, and when we got to his dad’s truck, we started fighting again, and when he said that Max wasn’t worthy enough to be my first kiss, I asked him who was,” I told her. “That’s when he kissed me.”

“Wait a sec. I thought you said thatyoukissedhim?”

“Well, I didn’t stop him,” I clarified. “He just…kind of grabbed my face, then kissed me.”

Kenzlee was quiet for a bit before asking, “Are you going to tell Talon?”

“Honestly, I don’t think that there’s anything to tell him,” I answered truthfully. “Yeah, it was…uh, nice and all, but it wasn’t like Lars kissed me because he likes me.”

“Why else would he kiss you, Edie?” she asked softly.

“To shut me up? To end my desire to find a boyfriend?” I shook my head, even though she couldn’t see me through the phone. “Honestly, I don’t know. He wasn’t exactly chatty afterwards.”

“Still, you don’t think that it’s something that Talon should know?”

“If Lars wants to tell him, then that’s fine,” I said. “However, I’m not interested in making things uncomfortable for something so…unimportant.”

“Edie, your first kiss ever is not unimportant.”

“It is when the boy in question tells you that it never should have happened,” I informed her.

“Ouch,” she grimaced.
