“Then talk to Edie, clear the air, then confess your sins to Talon, assuring him that Edie’s fine with how things went down,” he said, and I couldn’t ignore how my chest cracked a little at hypothetically choosing Talon over Edie.

“I’m so fucked,” I muttered, feeling it all the way down to my soul.

Chapter 12

The regret that simmers quietly.

Lars~

After Hunter couldn’t help me Saturday, I had ended up spending the rest of the weekend partying until I couldn’t stand myself any longer. Vince had decided to have a little get-together on Saturday night, and I’d gone like a fucking idiot. I’d gotten so drunk that I had crashed on one of his lawn chairs in the backyard. With Vince’s parents gone for the weekend, the bedrooms had been occupied by the guys that had gotten lucky, meanwhile, the rest of us had crashed where we had passed out. I’d been lucky enough to pass out on the back porch, the hangover the next morning exactly what I had deserved.

When I’d finally started feeling like myself again, I had eaten, bullshitted with my parents a little, then had called up Dillon to see if he’d wanted to play a game of basketball, anything to get rid of my hangover and forget about Edie and Talon for a little while. Granted, it hadn’t worked. My game had been shit, and I’d been home way before the streetlights had even come on.

Things had only gotten worse when I’d been on my way to pick up Edie for school, then received a text that I hadn’t needed to bother because Calliope had picked her up this morning.

I’d been fucking pissed.

I still was, truth be told.

I felt like an overprotective parent, wondering if their child’s new friend was a bad influence. While I’d never had anything against Calliope Fairfield before the beginning of this school year, she was bothersome to me now. Yeah, it was probably wrong to blame her for Edie’s stubbornness, but I didn’t like that Edie had someone else to turn to, and if that didn’t make me a world-class asshole, then I didn’t know what did. Granted, that was debatable after telling her that we shouldn’t have kissed the other night. Good or bad, her first kiss had ended with me shoving her into the truck, then letting her know that it was something that never should have happened.

Maybe I was just an idiot, instead of an asshole.

At any rate, whichever the answer, I was in a shitty mood, and I wasn’t sure how much longer I could take Edie acting like I didn’t exist. While I had her in fourth and six period, we didn’t sit next to each other, something that I should probably correct. I also had a feeling that she was going to try to catch a ride home with Calliope after school, but that wasn’t going to happen.

Tossing my shit in my locker, I was headed towards the snack bar when Dillon stopped me.

What now?

“I’ve got some great news for you, man.”

“If it’s that you’re going to buy my protein bars, then that is great news,” I replied dryly, heading for the snack area, letting Dillon follow me or not.

“It’s better than a morning snack,” he said, grinning like a loon.

“I doubt it,” I muttered, Edie fucking my head up.

“Rosa Venice was asking about you this morning,” he announced, making me stop to actually look over at him.

“What?”

Still grinning, Dillon started nodding his head like he was being tasered. “Yeah, she was asking about you.”

“Rosa Venice has a boyfriend,” I reminded him. “Why would she be asking about me?”

“The rumor is that her college boyfriend cheated on her, so she’s looking for some revenge dick,” he answered, all his teeth flashing. “Apparently, you’re at the top of her list for candidates.”

While Lakeside High had a plethora of pretty girls to choose from, Rosa Venice was hot in that tall, supermodel, exotic kind of way. She had black hair that ended at her ass, a face with sharp angles, only improved by the way that she applied her makeup, a body that could tempt a saint, and the confidence of a girl that knew she was drooled over. Rosa Venice was The Holy Grail at Lakeside High, but she’d always had a boyfriend, and she’d been with him for about four years already. I could also see why she’d feel the need for some revenge sex. I couldn’t see a girl with her kind of confidence taking rejection very well.

Yeah, no thanks.

“Not interested,” I said as I started walking towards the snack bar again.

“What?”

“You heard me,” I replied, getting angrier at Edie for killing my mojo. A month ago, I would have had Rosa Venice sucking my dick right now. Now, I couldn’t care less.

Fucking Edie Draven.
