Her hands came up to wrap around my wrists. “Lars, I need you to say it.” She shook her head slightly. “There can’t be any confusion about what we’re doing here, so I need to hear you say the words.”

Removing my hands from her face, I reached for her hips, lifted her easily, then dropped her on my lap. She was straddling me, something that I hoped to have happen often.

“Baby, that rumored girlfriend that I have isyou,”I finally told her.

Not impressed with my declaration of love, she said, “I don’t understand. Friday night, you said that our kiss shouldn’t have happened.”

“I still stand by that, Edie,” I replied. “However, had you not shut the door in my face that night, then I would have explainedwhyit shouldn’t have happened. Edie, your first kiss should have been one of your choice. It shouldn’t have been something to just get out of the way with some random guy.”

“You’re not some random guy,” she said pointedly.

“No, I’m not,” I agreed.

“Then why are you acting like you are?” she posed.

“Because I’m very aware that I’m not good enough for you, Edie,” I replied honestly. “Baby, you’re going to go on to change the world with that brain of yours, and all I can do is follow you blindly as you do it.”

Her brows furrowed. “Wait? What?”

“What?”

“You said that all you can do is follow me,” she repeated.

“Yeah, so?”

“So, you’d…you’d really follow me to wherever I end up?”

“What did you think would happen?” I asked, slightly confused.

“What about your future?”

“What about it?”

“Well, now that you can go to college, that has to mean something, right?” she went on. “Isn’t there a school that you want to go to? Maybe go with Hunter to UCLA?”

I readjusted her on my lap. “Why in the fuck would I want to go there?”

“Well, I…I don’t know…” she mumbled.

“Baby, I have no concrete plans for my future,” I informed her. “Yeah, thanks to Kenzlee, college is a possibility now, but why can’t I follow you if we get into the same college?”

“What if we don’t?”

“Then I’ll make sure to apply to whatever colleges are closest to your choice,” I replied easily. “Edie, I don’t think you understand what’s happening here.”

“Maybe I don’t,” she conceded. “Because it sounds like being with me is more important to you than your own future, and that’s…that’s crazy.”

I leaned forward, then placed a kiss on her chest. “Baby, that’s love,” I clarified for her. “And if you think that I don’t love you, then you haven’t been paying attention.” I kissed her again. “No way would I be doing this-risking everything-if this wasn’t love.”

“It’s that simple for you, huh?”

I pulled back to look at her. “The fuck it is,” I chuckled. “I’m fucking terrified of messing this up, but I’m also not going to keep denying myself, baby.” My hands tightened on her hips. “I want you, Edie. I want you, and I’ll do anything to have you.”

Her hands came up to play with my hair. “Even follow my dreams at the cost of your own?” she asked softly.

“Baby, youare my dream,” I told her. “I have no idea how it happened, but it did, and I’m done fighting it. I’m done beating myself up with all the reasons that I should stay away from you.”

“Lars?”
