The wench narrowed her eyes before saying, “You know what? My next boyfriend is probably going to be a saint compared to you.”

That got a growl out of me.

“I’m glad that you think that I have the makings of a saint, because if you think that you’ll ever have another boyfriend, then you are out of your damn mind, Edie.”

The stubborn girl just smirked up at me. “Whether or not I ever have another boyfriend all depends on whether or not you learn how to behave.”

“I’m not a dog.”

“That’s debatable,” she huffed, and considering my reputation with girls, I decided not to defend myself this time. Picking your battles was a real thing.

“Are we having our first fight as an official couple?” I teased, trying to soothe her ruffled feathers.

Edie rolled her eyes, then pulled out of my arms. “Are you hungry?”

“I’m an eighteen-year-old guy, do you even need to ask?” I huffed.

“I like to make sure there’s something for Mom to eat in between her shifts,” she remarked unnecessarily.

“I know, baby,” I replied. “I used to help Talon cook, too.”

She looked at me over her shoulder. “This is definitely going to take some getting used to.”

I followed her into the kitchen. “Edie, apart from knowing what it feels like to be inside you now, nothing between us has changed. We’re still friends, baby.”

Edie whirled around on me, her eyes wide. “I can’t believe you just said that.”

I shrugged. “It’s true.”

Her entire face fell, and that had the hairs on the back of my neck automatically standing at attention. While I knew Edie as well as I knew Talon, I didn’t know Edie as a girlfriend. I was going to have to learn how to tread lightly as we got to know these new versions of each other.

“What did I say?” She shook her head, then turned back to head towards the refrigerator. “Yeah, no. That’s not how this works.” I was in her face before she could even open the door to the fridge.

“How what works?” she asked, glaring up at me defiantly, and I really was going to have to make a mental note of her mood swings once a month.

“If something is bothering you, then you tell me,” I informed her. “I’m letting you know up front that I can’t read your mind, that I will not try to read your mind, and if there is something important enough to upset you, then I expect you to talk to me about it.”

“And what ifyou’rewhat’s upsetting me?”

“If I’m what’s upsetting you, then I deserve to know why,” I said plainly. “I can’t fix or address something if I don’t know what the issue is, and that’s not fair to me.” Her face softened. “Even if your issue is that you’re just in a pissy mood, then I can deal with that, Edie. What I won’t tolerate is not knowing what’s going on with you.”

After a few seconds, she finally said, “I was just reminded of why you can be so cavalier about sex.”

That had my gut tightening. “Is my past going to be a problem for you?”

Edie shook her head. “It’s not your past that’s the problem,” she sighed. “It’s mine.”

My brows furrowed a bit. “What do you mean?”

“I just…even though I owe Talon a lot, I just wish that I had a little more experience than what I have,” she confessed, and the possessive man in me did not appreciate her statement one bit.

“Well, I’m glad that you don’t,” I fired back, insensitive to her feelings. “I’d hate to have to fuck up every guy that you dated before me.”

Edie rolled her eyes again. “You’re such a jackass, Lars.”

“Loud and proud, baby.”

She shot me a look. “How is it that girls actuallywantedyou to be their boyfriend?”
