“How is a date going to ruin her future?” Dillon asked.

“If she starts dating, there’s nothing stopping her from falling in love with some loser, then following his stupid ass around, forgetting all about her own dreams and aspirations,” I answered.

“Orhe could fall in love with her, and then followheraround, forgetting all abouthisown dreams and aspirations,” Wes pointed out.

“Yeah, I’d rather not risk it,” I drawled out.

“Or maybe Lars wants her for himself,” Grant remarked, silencing the table.

I slid a look his way. “Watch yourself, Loomis,” I warned. “If you think that I give a shit that you’re bigger than me, I don’t.”

Grant quickly wised up. “I didn’t mean it like that,” he denied. “I’m just saying that you dating her would fix everything, wouldn’t it?”

“You know what else would fix it?” I said, shooting him a look. “You guys spreading the word that nothing’s changed as far as Edie Draven is concerned. If a guy is interested in her, then he better be interested in marrying her, too.”

“C’mon, Lars,” Wes drawled out slowly. “You don’t think that you’re overreacting a bit?”

“No, actually, I don’t,” I told him clearly. “I think that Edie Draven is bigger than Lakeside, and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure she stays on track. Talon didn’t risk his neck every Friday at those fights just for some asshole to ruin his sister with the promise of loving her forever just to get his dick wet.”

Dillon let out a low whistle. “Damn, Finley.”

“Yeah, you’re making it sound like all of us are douchebags,” Hector added.

I eyed each guy. “That’s not what I’m saying at all.”

“Then whatareyou saying?” Dillon asked.

“I’m saying that no guy on this campus deserves her because no guy on this campus was willing to get his ass kicked by Talon to be with her,” I clarified for them. “Like the cowards that they all are, they waited until he was gone to start thinking about approaching her, and the last fucking thing that Edie Draven is going to do is date a coward.” I stared pointedly at each one of them. “Any girl worth having is worth getting your ass kicked for, and that’s how I know that they’re all just looking for a piece of ass.” I stood up from the bench. “Well, they better look elsewhere because I have no problem fighting over that girl.”

Dillon threw his hands up in mock surrender. “Got it, man.”

“Yeah, no problem,” Wes muttered.

“Got it,” Grant echoed.

When I shot a look over at Hector, he threw his hands up, mimicking Dillon. “Yeah, got it.”

I left them to sit in their bullshit because I knew myself well enough to know that I wasn’t fit for polite company right now. Getting angry and irritated wasn’t my thing and it had me feeling pissed off. Yeah, it wasn’t Edie’s fault that guys were talking about her, but that didn’t mean that she couldn’t do her part to discourage them.

Heading to my locker, I pulled out my phone to call Hunter. I needed advice, and I’d rather get it from him right now. No one needed Talon Draven driving back to Lakeside to defend his sister.

That was the last thing that any of us needed.

Chapter 4

The responsibilities that we take seriously.

Lars~

By the time school had ended, I’d been in a mood. You’d think that after getting my dick sucked this morning that I’d be in a fan-fucking-tastic mood, but no.

Not at all.

In fact, I was in such a foul mood that no one in the locker room had dared to talk to me. Dillon had tried, but when he’d gotten a good look at my face, he’d gone back about his business. This thing with Edie was bothering me way more than it should, and I had no idea why. It wasn’t like Talon had insisted that I keep Edie under lock and key, but he had asked me to keep an eye on her. So, I was looking out for her the only way that I knew how; the same way that Talon had.

Walking out towards the football field, everything started to turn red as I saw Danny Mason leaning up against the bleacher rails, smiling up at Edie. Worse than that, Edie was smiling back down at him, and that shit wasnothappening.

Dropping my gear on the ground, I stormed my way up the bleachers, standing in front of Edie like a raging bull.
