“Okay, then.” I step back and turn to walk away. “Bye.”

As I spin around and stride off, I hear her, in a tone filled with a weird satisfaction and a sarcastic bent, mumble, “See you around, Hayden.”

Fuck, did I just make a mistake by hugging her?

I think she read more into that than I intended.

Typical Kristi—seeing possibility that isn’t there.

Should I even tell Addison I saw her?

I was planning to, but now I don’t know.

Maybe I’ll just wait until I get back to Atlanta.

Then I can tell Addison everything in person.

Addison

While Hayden is away with the team for games against the Blackhawks and the Blue Jackets, I concentrate on work.

The days fly by quickly, and the next thing I know, it’s Friday.

Yay!

But before I leave the office, Ms. Garcia calls me in to inform me that, starting next week, I’ll be working with more players.

Surprised, I ask, “What about me working exclusively with Hayden Harrington?”

She waves her hand. “You’ll still be going with him to events, but most of those outings will now be with his teammates as well.”

“Whoa, that’s a change.”

“It is.” She nods. “But the current arrangement was never supposed to last forever, remember?”

“Yes.” I nod.

She goes on, “Management is quite pleased with how Mr. Harrington has conducted himself in Atlanta. They’re very happy with the work you’ve done with him. We’re already hearing good feedback about that magazine feature you set up, and the issue isn’t even out yet. Now management would like to see you apply that same skill set to the team as a whole.”

Once I take all that in, I reply, “Wow, then I guess this is actually great news.”

“It is, Addison.” Ms. Garcia smiles. “This gives you more room to grow in your role as a consultant.”

I was more referring to the fact that Hayden is no longer under the microscope, but I don’t elaborate. He’s going to be so pleased. I can’t wait to talk to him. And maybe now that I’m not assigned to him exclusively one-on-one, we can start to think about revealing our relationship.

It’s going so damn well. It seems like a million years ago that we were always at each other’s throats.

This issomuch better.

Before I leave work, I receive a text from Hayden to confirm that we’re still on for late tonight after he gets back to Atlanta. The plan is for me to sleep over at his place, and though he’ll be coming in late, he’ll be coming in an entirely different way—ha ha—once he gets in bed with me.

I will be too.

And I can’t freaking wait!

With a big smile plastered on my face, I text back that I will definitely see him later tonight. I don’t mention anything about me now working with other players. I want to tell him that good news in person.

He’s going to be beyond thrilled that all his hard work off the ice has paid off. Mine has too. The Thunder trust and love him.
