“I was,” I insist. “I told you I wanted to talk to you about it in person.”

“I bet.” She crosses her arms. “Why did you even talk to her, Hayden? She said you were flirting with her. She said she felt like you still wanted her.”

“That’s a fucking lie!” I shout. “She asked to see me. I was in the locker room, and one of our trainers came in and told me someone wanted to talk to me out in the hall. I had no idea who it was, but when I went out, I saw it was Kristi. I only spoke with her to give her some sense of closure or whatever. She actually apologized too. But, Addison, I swear to you that I did not flirt with her. Why would I?”

Narrowing her pretty green eyes at me, she snaps, “I don’t know. But tell me one thing, Hayden.”

“Sure, anything. What?”

“Did you hug her?”

Blowing out a breath, I confess, “Yeah, I did. But she asked me to, and it didn’t mean—”

Holding up her hand, she cuts me off. “Stop. I don’t want to hear another word. But I will say this, buddy.”

“Yes?”

“We are fucking done.”

“Wait, what?” I’m taken aback, so much so that I actually take a step back. “You’re kidding me, right?”

“No.” She shakes her head. “I’m serious. I’m not playing games like this with you. I just think it’s better if we go back to a professional relationship. This, us”—she waves her hand between our bodies—“was clearly all a mistake.”

Swallowing hard, I say softly, “You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

“Babe…”

Biting her lip and looking like she’s about to cry, she chokes out, “Please, Hayden, just leave. I want to be left alone. Please.”

I don’t want to go.

I want to fix this.

But I have to respect her wishes as well.

Still, I’m not giving up on her.

She just needs some time.

“Okay.” I start to go, but then I turn back. “Addison, there’s one more thing I have to say.”

“Make it quick,” she snaps.

“Okay. I promise I’m going to fix this. And the reason why is because I lo—”

Bam!

She slams the fucking door in my face.

But before I walk away, even though she can’t hear me, I finish my sentence. “I love you.”

Addison

As soon as I slam the door, I lean back against it and burst into tears. I don’t know what Hayden was about to say, but I had to cut him off. If I hadn’t, I might’ve given in.

Such a big part of me wants to talk it over and work things out simply because I love the jerk.
