I devour the bar and down the juice in record speed.

Yeah, I’m a man with places to go, like over to Addison’s house.

After slipping on socks and running shoes, I head next door.

Addison never replied to my text. I thought she’d get back to me this morning, but she could still be in bed.

Once I reach her front door, I ring the buzzer.

And then I wait…and wait…and wait.

Okay, now I’m starting to worry.

I hate to key in the code and just let myself in, as I don’t want to startle or frighten her.

But, God, what if something happened?

She did lock herself out on the deck that one time.

I ring the doorbell once more, and then I start knocking frantically. “Addison, babe, are you in there? Are you okay?”

Crickets.

That’s it—I’m going in.

But just as I’m keying in the code, the door swings open.

Startled, but relieved to see she’s fine, I step back and say, “Hey.”

Addison does not look happy. She does look cute, though. She’s wearing a big bulky gray sweatshirt and distressed jeans, and her hair is up in a high ponytail.

“What’s wrong?” I ask. “I thought we had plans last night, sweetheart. Did something happen?”

Snorting, she crosses her arms. “Ha, did something happen, huh? You could say so, Hayden. But of course, you’d know more about that than I do.”

My brow furrows. “What does that even mean? And, by the way, can we talk about this inside? It’s a little chilly out here this morning.”

I don’t know why she hasn’t invited me in yet, but it looks like she’s not going to.

Sure enough, she states, “We’re fine just where we are, thank you very much.”

Why is she being so weird and cryptic?

“All right.” I grow serious. “Addison, for real, what’s wrong?”

“Oh, let me see…” She starts tapping her sneakered foot. “Let’s start with this—I received an interesting call last night.”

Now I’m even more confused. “You did?”

“Yes, I sure the fuck did.” She’s glaring at me now. “It was my ole pal Kristi calling. She had some rather interesting updates, ones I hadn’t heard before—from you or anyone. But mostly not from you, Hayden.”

I let out a groan, to which she arches a brow.

Fuck, it all makes sense now—why Addison blew me off last night, why she didn’t return my text, and why she looks ready to kill me at this very moment.

“Look,” I begin, blowing out a breath. “I don’t know what that crazy girl told you, but I can explain everything. You know she misreads shit. Regardless, I was planning to tell you all the details once I saw you in person.”

“Well,” she scoffs, “you’re seeing me now, and it took me bringing it up to you for it to even come to your mind. You saw Kristi, and we talked after that. You never mentioned one word to me. Were you really going to ever say anything?”
