Just then, I heard the crunch of snow behind me.

I turned around to find a tall, lithe form towering over me. Her head tilted to the side as she inspected me. Movement came from the writhing vines adorning her waist and arms. Layer upon layer of long, spiderweb-thin fabric wrapped around her body to accentuate the unnaturally long shape of her torso. She wore a sharp crown of claws and starlight, but what made me gasp was the snake coiled around her neck.

I took a step back. Then she inhaled deeply, as if tasting my scent, and said, "Goldenblood."

“W-who are you?" I demanded. She looked like death personified, and my pulse quickened at the thought. “Have you come to kill me?”

She tilted her chin up, and her eyes turned gold. I recoiled. Then gold webbing appeared across her arms. The small, rounded flakes grew more prominent.

Not webbing.

Scales.

She brought her arms out on both sides of her body. "I am the Queen of Air and Shadow, and I am the maker of your kind."

My eyebrows furrowed. “But I am human.”

She shook her head. “You are not. I touched your small king hundreds of years ago and made him something more.”

I blinked rapidly. “What do you want?”

The surrounding air grew darker, and I shivered violently.

“I have come to collect a debt.”

The end…for now.
