And now the only best friend I have in this big city is going to hate me and my baby, too, once she finds out who the father is.

“Stone? You like Zeke? Girllll, he’s a puck bunny connoisseur. He’ll chew you up and spit you out.” Erin laughs.

Don’t I fucking know it?

“No. She doesn’t,” Rose answers for me.

“He’s not what you think, Rose.”

“He’s not whatyouthink, Honey.” My face falls, and she pulls me in for a hug. “I don’t know what happened between you two. I’m sorry for talking bad about him.” She talks low for me to hear. “I’m just worried because I know him, Honey. My brother may be best friends with him, but he talks. They all talk. And what I’ve heard isn’t good.”

Pleading my case, because I need her to love me and my baby, once I tell her, “He was a gentleman. Seriously, Rose. I would tell you if he was anything but. And yeah, I got the feeling he knows he’s a big shot and extremely sexy and uses it to his advantage, but …” I trail off. Saying ‘he’s different’ makes me sound like an unrealistic love-struck teenager. “My parents are love children. How do you think I got the name Honey Childs? Hello? Hippie!! We moved and lived in compounds with other families all my life. We were taught to share with and love on everyone we came in contact with. So when I saw him, something drew me to him.”

“Honey, you’re so sweet and caring and see the good in everyone. I love that about you. But New York is tough. Everyone here is out for themselves. You have to be careful. And I’m your friend, and I want to look out for you.”

“Thank you for that. I appreciate it more than you know.” I glance over her shoulder and see her brother has skated up to the glass. “Looks like your brother is going to look out for us both, though.”

She turns, and he’s staring her down with a look that could kill. I see him motion with his hand to spin. She smirks. “I told you he’d freak out.” She turns her back to him and I see his jaw clench. He waits until she looks back at him and he flips her off. She barks a laugh and blows him a kiss. I take this all in, loving the dynamic between these two. I can feel the love floating across the ice and jumping the glass barrier. He flips his eyes to me, back to her, then back to me again. His brow furrows and then the light bulb goes off.

He recognizes me.

“Shit.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Your brother was there that night when I met Eli. And I think he just remembered me.”

We both look his way again, but he’s turned and is skating off.

“Honey, tell me what you did.”

Taking a deep breath, I blow it out and say, “I slept with the Gangsta Goalie. And now I’m pregnant with his baby.”

CHAPTER9

EZEKIEL

After my one game suspension,I am eagerly awaiting time back on the ice. I’ll tame it down for tonight. Even though it’s a home game and the fans want what they want, I won’t give the show that earns me another fine.

Even though I want to.

I need to.

The more days that go by where I am not coming across Honey, the more days I‘m wanting to reach out and strangle someone.

I lace up my skates and am the last to leave the locker room. Coming down the tunnel, I breathe in the cool air and my body comes alive. I live for this. The competition. The angst. I want it all.

I step onto the ice and push off with my skates and feel the burn in my thighs. I listen to the fans erupt when I come into view, and I watch as the opponents move closer to their bench.

I scare them.

Good.

I snag a puck and skate around, slashing ice as I skate up next to Luke.

“There he is! The star of the show.”

“Fuck off.” I eye him. “What’s with the shit-eating grin, pretty boy?”
