Lachlan looks ready to pass out at being called Daddy. Daddy Lachlan. “We need to leave right now.”

Laughing, I say, “Let me grab my bag.”

The bells over the door jangle, and two hulking men stand in the vestibule, their faces shadowed. My heart scrambles into my throat as I dig my nails into Lachlan.

He goes still as a statue, his face unreadable. Until the two men come into the light. I sigh in relief, but Lachlan looks alarmed as his brothers, Eoghan and Balor, amble toward us. Their grim faces fill me with worry as spots cloud my vision, fearing they are here to give me bad news.

Stasia…

Lachlan knows his brothers like the back of his hand. He pulls me toward him, cradling my head. “What are you doing here? Both of you?”

“We’re here for Katya,” Eoghan says, his voice stoic and absent of any emotion. His sharp, dark gray suit is the epitome of dressed to kill.

“No,” I whimper and cry into my husband’s broad chest.

When I cleaned out my mailbox at school, I handed over Stasia’s strange postcards. Without a sample of her handwriting, and with her social media accounts dark, there was no way to authenticate if she had indeed sent them.

Or if she’s even alive.

Eoghan and Balor don’t say the obvious. Since no others showed up in the past two years, she’s probably dead.

“Is it Stasia?” Lachlan asks, bracing me for the most terrible news a sister can get.

“Aye,” Balor answers.

“How bad?” Lachlan holds me tighter.

“Pretty bad.” Eoghan shoves meaty hands into his pockets. “For us.”

“Us?” Lachlan sneaks a look at me.

“What’s happened?” I stare at each of my new brothers-in-law with desperate, questioning eyes. “Talk to me.”

“We know where she is,” Eoghan says.

My breath hitches, and I wiggle out of Lachlan’s tight hold. “Is she alive?”

“Very.” Balor pushes his signature thick horn-rimmed glasses up his long roman nose.

“Oh my God.” Relief washes over me, and the air is breathable again. “Talk to me. Where is she?”

The brothers look at Lachlan, who says, “You didn’t answer me. Why is her being found bad forus?”

“Considering where she is and who’s she’s with,” Balor says.

“I’m going to smash both your heads together,” Lachlan barks at his brothers. “You’re scaring my wife. Mypregnantwife. Now, fucking talk!”

The way they stare at me, it dawns on me… They don’t trust me. “I’ll remind you both, my name is O’Rourke. A name I took willingly. I am part of this family, and my husband comes first. And by extension you. I kissed Kieran’s ring. Now tell me where my sister is!”

“She’s in Seattle,” Eoghan finally answers.

“Seattle? Why—” Lachlan’s jaw drops. “Wait…”

“Aye.” Eoghan ambles forward. “Katya, your sister is alive and well. In fact, she’s pregnant, too.”

“No,” Lachlan grinds out. “You’re kidding. Who…”

My brain catches up. Lachlan’s youngest brothers live in Seattle. The identical twin doctors.

“There’s more to the story.” Eoghan’s face turns grim. “It’s pretty ugly. You should both sit down.”

More? Ugly? And my sister is…pregnant. But from which twin brother?

It doesn’t matter. If my father finds out Stasia has been with either of Lachlan’s brothers all this time, andshe’s pregnant, he’s going to kill every single O’Rourke.

Including me…
