CHAPTER 20

Present

Rebecca

“You don't have to worry. You won't get pregnant. You're still under the effects of the birth control you've been taking for years,” Manasseh brings up the topic deliberately, not caring that his driver is at the wheel, and we're sitting in the back. Peter inevitably hears everything, even though he pretends to be deaf or something.

“Fine,” I reply curtly and sneak a glance at Peter, curious if he's paying attention to us.

“Do you regret what happened between us tonight?” Manasseh insists on the subject.

“I don't want to comment,” I refuse to look at him and fidget on the leather seat.

“No complaints, I assume,” he puffs up with pride, and the excess of testosterone suffocates me.

“Can we not talk about this here?” I hide my hands under my thighs, feeling myself retreat back into my shell.

“Why?”

“Because we're not alone, Manasseh. These things should be discussed in private, but I guess you haven't outgrown that stage of immaturity where you boast about fucking the most popular girl in school.”

Manasseh rolls his eyes in annoyance and ponders for a moment before opening his mouth.

“Peter doesn't care about what we do. I can do this,” he leans over me and tries to kiss me, but I turn my head and refuse him.

“No!” I mutter, staring out the car window, but he doesn't take no for an answer and I find myself bitten on the neck.

“I can do that too,” he leans back in his seat, licking his lips, while I press on the area pulsating with pain, knowing that I'll have a mark left.

“I want to keep this a secret,” I rest my palms on the armrest, and I bet he's seething with frustration inside, especially since I rejected his kiss.

“What do you want to keep a secret? That you slept with me?” he frowns, clearly not pleased with the idea, returning to his spot.

“Yes, we both know how well you can keep my secrets safe,” I tickle his pride, of which I'm fully aware, and feel him relax.

Manasseh starts laughing, and I remember that Samael still doesn't know about those pictures even until today.

Yes, he's insufferable, rude, idiotic, selfish, narcissistic, but he's also incredibly honest, and when he promises something, he sticks to it. Despite his questionable behavior, Manasseh is damn loyal.

“I'll take your secrets to the grave,” he assures me, and I know it's ironic.

“As long as I do what you ask,” I add and nod.

“Nothing is free in this world.”

“Fine, I'll play along,” I echo his sentiment.

“I don't want you moving in with your father. I want you to continue living with me, so I don't agree with any other propositions. Tomorrow, I have a meeting at a beautiful location. Come with me. You'll like it.”

“This time, who am I accompanying, so I know whether to hide my switchblade in my boot or in my underwear?”

“Easy there, tigress!” Manasseh stifles a laugh. “You'll be accompanying me,” he raises his eyebrows playfully.

“Okay, then in my underwear,” I say seriously.

I hear Peter snicker, genuinely amused, as if he's listening to a talk show funnier than Jimmy Fallon's.

“At least someone's having fun,” Manasseh gives Peter a hostile look.
