I dropped my head onto her shoulder and let out an even bigger sigh. “He was nice.”

“Exactly.”

Chapter Eleven

“We’llseeyouTuesday!”Tanner dismissed the latest in a long line of heart-eyed betas who had stopped to talk to him at our table in the student union. We were trying to gather volunteers for an event for Stuff Santa’s Sack, one of the charities my dad’s office had founded, but I wasn’t sure how many of the girls were actually interested in helping, or were just interested in Tanner.

“You’ll see her Tuesday?” I questioned him.

“I don’t know. I don’t care. These betas know they’re barking up the wrong tree. I’m a taken man.”

“You are not taken. You are optimistic, at best.”

“Fine. But I want to be taken. Kara is…” He trailed off as he looked for the right word.

“Perfect?” I supplied.

“Mine,” he demanded.

I couldn’t believe it, but it turned out that Tanner’s early declaration of interest in Kara at the reveal ceremony turned out to have some merit. They were a scent match at the Ball, and their first courting date had gone well.

“At least your dates are going better than mine,” I pouted and started cleaning up our table now that our time slot in the union was over.

“Yes, I heard all about howniceDaniel was.“ I rolled my eyes at him as he mocked me. “But you didn’t even give Will a chance. You just bolted.”

“Of course I bolted. There is no way he’s the right alpha for me. I’m looking for someone mature and thoughtful. Loyal. Generous.”

“Your omega doesn’t care about what you think you want. She knows what you need. And you need to give Will a chance. You know a wild alpha could do a complete 180° when he meets his omega. Isn’t that the plot of basically every one of your romance novels? Good girl reforms the bad boy?”

“You can’t be serious.”

“I am, and actually, here’s your chance!” He waved across the union’s courtyard. “Yo, Hunter!”

Hunter?

I turned to look at who Tanner had yelled at and saw a large beta walking toward us... right next to Will.

“Tanner!“ I scowled. He ignored me. Why were we friends?

“Hey, man, what’s up?” Hunter gave Tanner an elaborate high five greeting while I ignored the man standing next to him.

“Mia and I just finished signing up volunteers for Stuff Santa’s Sack. What about you guys?”

“Cool, cool. I’m heading down to the arcade to beat Will’s ass at… everything. I’m going to beat him at everything.”

The man I wouldn’t acknowledge scoffed, and I couldn’t help the chuckle that slipped out.

Tanner looked over at me. “We’ll join you.”

“What!” I blurted. “No, we won’t.”

“We will.” He turned back to Hunter. “Did you know that Mia’s an ace at Skee-Ball?”

“Is that so?” Hunter questioned, glancing between me and Will. Will must’ve filled him in on our non-date.

“She absolutely is. We’ll clean up here and meet you guys downstairs.” They repeated their fist bump thing and when Hunter turned to head toward the arcade, Will was already halfway there.

I smacked Tanner on the arm. “What are you thinking?”
