Except neither of them were my alphas anymore, were they?

I tossed and turned all night, so the ‘rest’ part of my plan had been a complete failure. I finally gave up trying to sleep and headed to Omega Reid’s office early the next morning.

“Come in!” her melodious voice welcomed me through the door when I knocked.

Her office was bright, clean, and chic. The perfect physical representation of my advisor.

“Good morning, Mia,” she greeted, gesturing for me to sit in one of the chairs opposite her desk. “I expected I’d see you soon.” Her voice wasn’t full of pity, but something else I couldn’t name.

“I need to know what happened with Grant Moore.” I skipped the pleasantries. If she knew to expect me, she had answers.

“I’m not sure I shoul—”

“You absolutely should! I thought he was my alpha! And now he’s gone? What am I supposed to do?!” Apparently, taking the night to cool down hadn’t worked as well as I’d hoped.

“Gone?” She looked surprised, which in turn surprised me.

“Why were you expecting me if you didn’t know Grant was gone?”

She turned to her computer and started typing. “This is confidential information.” She glanced over at me with that odd look again before resuming typing. “But circumstances being what they are, you should probably know.”

“Yes. Yes, I should.” I nodded like a dashboard bobble head.

Omega Reid took a deep breath before turning back to give me her full attention.

“We received an anonymous tip that Mr. Moore was masking his scent.”

“What? No. I could smell him. His scent was fine.”

“And what was that scent?”

I was less certain than a moment ago.

“Key lime pie?”

The pitiful look finally showed up. Omega Reid spun her computer monitor toward me and pointed at a form on the screen.

“Mr. Moore’s registered scent was coconut. Not key lime pie.”

What?

No.

Coconut?

I’d smelled it so many times around him. I thought it was just another layer of his scent.

“Not key lime pie?”

“No. He’d apparently been masking his own scent and applying an artificial one.”

“How?Why?”

“The ‘how’ we’re looking into. The ‘why’ it seems… was to coerce a bond with you.” She seemed very hesitant to mention that.

“What?”

“That was part of the tip. The source thought there might have been questionable motives. I hope you understand that this is inexcusable, and we will be pressing for the harshest punishment at his campus trial.”
