“No one knows that better than us, Eric.”

“And yet you still insist on playing it.” He retorts.

“We’re in lurve Mr. FBI. Can’t you just be happy for us?” Giada asks teasingly. I swear this woman, she’ll be the death of me.

“Ignore her, Eric. She’s high on oxytocin. But yeah, we need to sort a few things out before we finish this.”

“Oxytocin? Is that some new drug? Are you drugging her, Romano?”

Both Giada and I break out in amused chuckles. “No fool, that’s like whatever hormone is released that makes you feel high when you’re in love.”

Eric’s brow furrows really deep. “So, you’re saying you’re in love?”

Giada and I look at each other and then simultaneously shrug. I turn to Eric. “Pretty much yeah.”

He blows out a breath and then starts rubbing his forehead like he has a migraine. “Okay, so… what? Y’all want to be some star-crossed lovers or some shit? This won’t work. Youhaveto know that.”

I smile. “That’s why we need just a few more days. To talk. Could you like, calm the other side down some? Tell them you’re making headway in finding her and they should just chill?”

He spins on his heel, looking like he’s about to burst a gasket. It’s actually funny and I have to bite my lower lip not to break into laughter. Giada has an amused smile on her face and she’s watching him like he’s her favorite show. Beneath all the light heartedness though, is a cold steel resolve to get our way, no matter what. We didn’t even have to discuss it.

We just know.

“Okay. Okay. Fine. Here’s what’s gonna happen. I’m gonna remove myself from this mess and pretend like I don’t know shit. Y’all sort yourselves out. Romano, you made this mess, youclean it up.”

“Of course I will. You can count on me, don't worry so much. You’ll get gray hairs before your time.”

He rubs at his bald spot. “Too late,” he says with the first flicker of humor he’s shown all day. With a last shake of his head, he turns towards the door, “I’m leaving this in your capable hands Monti. Don’t let me down.”

“Yeah, yeah. Bye.”

We watch him leave before both turning to each other, all sign of amusement gone. “He’s right you know,” I say.

“I know. I’ve been thinking about it all day and I think you need to send a ransom note. Let them know this is a matter of honor and you demand restitution.”

I nod. “Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.”

She grins. “Great minds.”

I can’t help smiling back. We’re like a pair of giddy kids who think they’re the first to stay up and meet Santa, and now we know something no one else on earth knows.

Oxytocin has a lot to answer for.

“Okay so what do you think? Should I cut letters out of a newspaper and paste them to a paper, or shall I send an email?”

She throws back her head and laughs. This entire time, we are yet to let go of each other. I turn her around, arm around her waist and propel her towards the table in the corner so we can eat our lasagna before it’s too cold. There’s a kitchen in the warehouse somewhere and I go in search of forks. I collect a couple of cold beers from the fridge and bring those back as well.

“I see Benedetto did some more shopping.” I say as I emerge from the kitchen, clutching my bottles.

“Yeah. He got a whole bunch of stuff. I had to ask him if he was expecting more people.”

I laugh. “Yeah, Benedetto believes in being overprepared.”

“Yeah, he brought me some really embarrassing vaginal products I don’t even use.”

“Eugh,” I wince. I told Benedetto to make sure she had everything she needed. Seems he took me a little too much to heart. “Sorry about that.”

“No, it was sweet of him. I don’t mind.”
