“Fine. I’ll just get on with it then.”

“Good.”

I sigh, “I want to get married.”

He frowns. “I thought you had an issue with your betrothed.”

I grimace. “That’s not who I want to marry. There’s someone else.”

His brow clears. “I see.”

“She’s… well, she’s the girl I’ve been telling you about. The one from my BDSM club.”

“Oh…” he looks concerned, “Didn’t you say you didn’t want to taint her with the murkiness of your life?”

“Yeah, but that’s before I discovered that she’s connected. You won’t believe me if I tell you who she is.”

“Tell me.”

“A Cardinali. The one and only heir. Her name is Giada.”

Father Lorenzo’s brows shoot up almost to his hair. “Is this wise?”

“No. Absolutely not. But we’re in love and we want to get married.”

The priest considers me intently. I sit very still and let him process.

“I heard through the grapevine that Giada Cardinali had been kidnapped.”

My lips twist. “Yeah, technically she was.”

“And now you’re getting married?”

I shrug. “Yeah, and we need your help to do that.”

“Have you really thought this through, Romano?”

“As much as I can, from every angle. It looks bad, any way you slice it except that I love her, and she loves me, and we want to be together.”

Father Lorenzo shakes his head slowly, still staring at me. “In a million years, I would never have expected you to say those words.”

“Why?”

“You’re just always so… self-contained. I was beginning to despair of you ever letting anyone in.”

I cock my head to the side, “So you’ll do it?”

Father Lorenzo sighs. “Against my better judgement, yes, I’ll help you get married. But Romano?”

“Yes Father?”

“I hope you know what you’re doing.”

“Me too Father. Me too.”

I go straight from Father Lorenzo’s to the county clerk’s to apply for a marriage license. With Giada on zoom, we manage to get the license and now we just have to pray that no one with sufficient clout tries to look us up.
