My mother blinks at me. Out of the few things we have in common, Adele is number one. “He got tickets for you and me?”

“Well… um no. He got tickets for me and him plus two other people. Tickets, private plane, hotel… everything’s catered for mother. It’s for this weekend.”

My mother just continues to stare uncertainly at me. “And you want me to go with you?”

“It’ll be a good chance for you to get to know him.”

“But… your father already agreed to the marriage.”

“Yeah… and?” I frown in confusion.

“You don’t have to win me over honey.”

I roll my eyes, blowing out an irritated breath. “Do you wanna come or not?”

She pursed her lips. “Ask Aunt Ludovica if she’ll come with us.”

I smile wide. “Great.” I almost skip out of the room, I’m so excited.

Adele!

I call my aunt and she agrees to go with us at once, even though she barely knows who I’m talking about.

“It will give you a chance to spend time with your husband.” She whispers confidentially.

I love her so much.

You’d think that beingcosa nostrawould have afforded me some opportunity to travel in a private jet, but no, I had not in fact had the chance to do that. It was a ten-seater with comfortable, reclinable leather seats and little tables in between. I sit with Romano at the back while my mother and aunt take the front seats, put their feet up and promptly fall asleep.

We arrive in Vegas a few hours later, just as the sun is setting.

“So, here’s how it’s going to go,” my mother says as we drive to the hotel. “You and Romano will take your tickets and your aunt and I will take ours.”

I cock an eyebrow. “What do you mean, mom?”

“I mean here’s your chance to be alone, so you better take it.”

Romano puts a hand around my shoulders and squeezes. “Copy that Mrs. C. Or can I call you mom?” he asks, chuckling.

She gives him a side eye. “We’re not there yet.”

The limo comes to a stop at the Bellagio and we all alight. Romano hurries to the reception to get everyone their keys.

When he hands my mother her key, she looks from him to me. “This is the last time I expect to see you tonight.”

Romano salutes. “Yes ma’am.”

My mother almost smiles before wheeling away from us and following the concierge and aunt Ludovica.

“I got us two suites. I think they’re on the same floor.” He whispered in my ear.

I turn to give him a look, “Tell me they’re not adjoining.”

“No. They’re on opposite sides of the same floor. Fountain view for both. Trust we can be as loud as we want to.”

I nudge him playfully. “Naughty.”
