“It doesn’t matter, it’ll be fine.”

“You’re not fine, Lye, you need medication.” Lycus shakes his head.

“It’ll wear off soon,”

“Why would he give you wolfsbane? Was he betting against you?” Kalen snarls, trying to pour some more water into his mouth. Lycus refuses instead lying back down.

“He didn’t, it's my fault. He tried to protect me.” Lycus says and Kalen scoffs.

“All he has done is try to get you bloody killed.” Kalen tells him.

“He came for me,” Lycus mumbles drifting off.

“Who did?” Kalen worries, his stomach sinking.

“Lysander,” Lycus mutters. Kalen falls back against the tree. Guilt writhes through him yet I don’t understand what he feels guilty about as he runs his fingers through Lycus’ hair, peering down at him.

“You deserve better than me.” Kalen tells him, sadly, when he stares at the infinity marking of their mates names. Kalen clenches his jaw knowing Lycus is right. They can’t keep living like this, if something happens to Lycus it will be his fault. He knows Lycus only goes to the pits because of him.

Kalen’s fingers twitch over his marking as he sends a flare of his magic into the marking, blasting it so hard the entire thing glows and burns his skin. He burns so much power trying to get their attention that it exhausts him, and he eventually burns out, passing out next to Lycus.

Kalen doesn’t wake until someone kicked his foot. He yawned, shaking his head and sitting up. He peered down at Lycus when someone cleared their throat.

Turning his head, he came face to face with Darius, who suddenly crouches next to him in a suit. He was so much more terrifying in real life, and Kalen’s heart beats faster, fear coursing through him as he stares into the demonic eyes of Darius Wraith.

Darius eyed Kalen’s mark on his neck before looking at Lycus. Darius’ brows furrowed while Kalen tried to shake Lycus awake, petrified of the man that was constantly on the news and for nothing good. His heart was pounding in his chest when he noticed Tobias standing behind him, also staring at them curiously.

“What, Kalen?” Lycus groaned and sat up before noticing them. Lycus instantly went on defense, ripping Kalen behind him with strength that clearly indicated what Lycus was. Darius tilted his head at Lycus, looking him over.

“Are you the one who called on us?” Darius asked.

“Yes,” Lycus said while Kalen was worried Darius would kill him for it.

“We both did.” Kalen stammers. Lycus looks at Kalen oddly and Kalen realizes he must have been pretty sick to be able to ignore the burning of his wrist because Kalen’s throbbed for ages after calling on them.

“Why are you at the park? Do you live nearby?” Tobias asked, glancing around the derelict place, while Lycus peered up at him. Tobias tried to look around Lycus at Kalen, who was peering over Lycus’ shoulder.

“We live here, but you can go. He didn’t mean to call on you,” Kalen blurted.

Darius looked up at Tobias, who nodded to him before Darius stood.

“Come on then. I can’t leave you here knowing that,” Darius told them.

Lycus looked at Kalen over his shoulder.

“Where would you take us?” Kalen asked, wondering if they were being led to their deaths. Darius turns his attention to Kalen, his head tilting from side to side. He studied Kalen for a few long, tense moments until Lycus growled, not liking the way Darius was focused on him.

“I mean our mate, no harm. He just looked familiar,” Darius told Lycus. While Kalen hid behind Lycus.

“You never answered him,” Lycus states, Darius’ eye dart to Kalen again.

“I’m taking you home. Now, come on.” Darius tells them before rising to his feet.

“I wanted to come earlier, but I was in a meeting. Now, hurry up. I have another in an hour and need to get you set up back home before I head to the council,” Darius told them. When Darius’ eyes move to the ground where their bag holding the few belongings they share sat. Darius bends down, and Lycus moves to stop him but freezes under Darius’ demonic gaze. Darius plucks something from the front pocket of the bag.

“I understand you’re scared for Kalen, Lycus. But I don’t recommend trying to challenge the person trying to help you,” Darius says, standing back up. Kalen clutching Lycus’ arm, trying to urge him to calm down, knowing Lycus would kill for him, but against these two terrifying men, it would only end with Lycus' death if they chose it.

The crinkling of a packet forced Kalen’s attention to Darius, who was holding his scripted medication. Kalen shrinks, embarrassed.
