“Sure, I’ll try my best,” he says.

“Okay, let’s do this,” I tell him before returning my attention to the documents.

I check the documents, and some of the information starts making sense to me. I see the detail the lawyer has stated. I flip through the three pages of documents before I find the space to append my signature.

“Can I have a pen?” I ask.

“Of course,” Mr. Donald says as he hands over a ball pen to me.

“Thank you,” I tell him as I sign in a straight line.

“Is that all?” I ask as I raise my head.

“Yes, that’s all,” Mr. Donald says with a broad smile as he stretches his hand to me.

“Thank you,” I tell him as I return his handshake.

“I’ll have that,” he says as he takes the document from me. He checks it for a briefly and nods before saying,

“I’ll hand over the rest of the documents after six months.”

“Thank you,” the words keep coming out of my lips rapidly.

“You’re welcome,” he says with a broad smile.

“If you don’t mind, I’d like to take you to get the death certificate,” he says.

“I don’t mind; I think it’s with my aunt. We can go together to her place, or better still, I can scan and mail it to you,” I reply as I stand up.

“Great, I’ll just come along to get it. I need to see her anyway,” he says. I frown, wondering what he has to discuss with Aunt Maryann, but I don’t probe him. We leave the office and step outside.

I’m in awe when he leads me to an expensive-looking car. I don’t have to know its brand to realize it would cost at least four times my previous salary if not more. Just how much did John spend to sustain this lawyer? Anyways, it’s none of my business. He is gone now, and that’s all that matters.

The drive to the house is long. We get to the opulent street within minutes. I stare at the familiar gigantic houses lining the street. Exquisite classic and elegance are the things depicted in this estate. The sight is refreshing and distracts me from the present.

“Here we are,” Mr. Donald says as he stops the car. I don’t waste another second as I step out his expensive car.

I take in my uncle’s house again. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of its beauty. The house is enormous, a sprawling expanse of sheer white brick and towering windows, but even the front yard seems to go on forever. It is bursting with tall, exotic palm trees and an odd collection of unmatching flowers, creating a strange yet stunning rainbow of color.

The house is ultra-modern and minimalistic, making the garden stand out even more by contrast. The windows are tinted to give us privacy. This is what I love about the house, cozy and homely.

I turn around when Mr. Donald clears his throat behind me.

“Oh please, come in,” I tell him. I lead him inside the house.

“Mr. Donald,” my aunt greets him when we enter the living room.

“Good day, ma’am,” Mr. Donald greets. I wait for them to exchange pleasantries.

“I assume you’ve told Phebe everything,” she says.

“Yes, she has to stay a few weeks to complete the process,” he says.

“Oh, that’s beautiful.” Aunt MaryAnn’s eyes brighten on hearing this.

“About that, I’ll need a copy of Mr. Landon’s death certificate,” he says.

“Of course. Let me get it for you,” Aunt Maryann says. The room remains silent until
