Without waiting for her response, he snatched his keys up off the counter, grabbed his cut from the hook on the wall and slipped it on, and left.

Stella

Everything about the man had been irritating her all day. From the way he breathed to the way he silently sneezed drove her insane. Who sneezed like that, anyway? The way every step he took sounded like he was trying to test the strength of the floorboards, and the slight clicking of the keys as he typed on his laptop was like the representation of the ticking of her internal last nerve.

Stella knew when she was like that the only thing that would make her calm her tits was chocolate. She had checked the cupboard and found that she had eaten the last of her stash. That had been the last straw for her.

Sitting on the toilet, she replayed their conversation in her brain, which didn’t help matters. Yeah, she recognized that she hadn’t been fair to him, but all the guilt she felt about that went right out the window when he mentioned that he had her phone and had been keeping it from her. Once again, he was hiding things… like the mysterious phone calls he wouldn’t discuss with her.

She was still sitting there when he returned. She heard the cabin door open and close, and heard his footsteps across the space, seconds before there was a light knocking on the door.

“What?” she asked. Her anger had waned, but that had left her feeling defeated.

“I brought you your chocolate. I’ll leave it on the counter and give you some space for a while. Let me know if you need me or anything.”

She huffed her annoyance, got up, and swung the door open. Ignoring the fact that he had to step back to avoid being slammed in the face with the wood panel, she put her hands to her hips and glared at him. “Oh sure! Fucking run because a woman is a bit difficult!”

“I’m not fucking running!” His eyes widened with his anger, but Stella didn’t give a damn.

“Sure seems that way to me!”

“Why? Because I feel like I’m the cause of your whatever-the-fuck, so I’m trying not to do anything that would make it worse? Yeah, that’s sofucking wrong of me!”

“Well, you’ve been irritating all day! The least you could do is not make me feel like an outcast! Especially because you won’t let me out of this place!”

Trick leaned back against the counter and crossed his arms over his chest. “What am I doing that’s so fucking irritating?”

“Well…” She tried to think of anything that she could say that wouldn’t sound petty, but all that came out was, “You breathed.”

The laugh he gave was anything but filled with humor. “I breathed.” He shook his head. “How dare I. Fucking. Breathe.”

“No… I mean… you breathed… loudly.”

He straightened, crossed the kitchen, and started digging through the plastic shopping bag that was sitting on top. “It’s a good gods damn thing I think you’re fucking adorable when you’re irritating or I would walk out that damn door and not fucking come back, but we both know I won’t fucking do that because I’m addicted to your fucking attitude.” He pulled something orange out of the bag and held it out to her. “Here. Eat them. There are three more in the bag. If you want more, I’ll go buy out the damn store. Your ice cream is in the freezer, and I bought you the tea you like. Can you fucking forgive me forbreathingnow?”

“Don’t be ridiculous.” She snatched the food of the gods from his hand and ripped open the package. After biting into one of the cups, she glared at him. “Thank you. But that’s not all you did.”

“Fucking hell,” Trick mumbled as he yanked out the kitchen chair and plopped down on it. “Tell me all of my sins, Stiletto.”

“Well, first off, you keep calling me that.”

He nodded. “And when you’re done treating me like the enemy, I’ll explain the importance of that, but I won’t stop calling you that.”

“Fine. Whatever.” She ate the rest of the cup before she moved on to the next thing. “You keep me locked up here.”

“You haven’t been locked up for weeks… except for that one time we used the cuffs for a reason you most certainly didn’t have a problem with.” His arched brow was just as annoying as the way he sneezed.

“Youknowwhat I mean. I want to be able to get out of here sometimes.”

He shrugged. “Okay. We can go for a walk in the woods or for a drive, but you know why I don’t let you go to town.”

She waved off his excuses. “I want to go for drives. At least one a day.”

“Done. Any other commandments I’ve broken?”

“You don’t even believe in God, so staaahp.”

Trick chuckled and crossed his legs at his ankles. “Fine. Continue.”
