“What? Why?”

Trick ran a hand over his head and sighed. “You know I won’t tell you what she tells me. I won’t betray her trust like that, but she needs to talk to you, and I need you to focus on her feelings and not on Jenna’s during that conversation. I love both my nieces, but Mia needs you a little more right now.”

“Trick,” Rock growled, “tell m—”

“No. She’ll tell you.” He sighed. “Bro, you know if it had to do with her safety, I’d rat her out in a second. That’s not what this is.”

“Okay.” Trick heard the rustling of blankets and sheets. “I’ll go talk to her right now.”

“That’s good. Night, Brother.”

“Night.” Rock ended the call.

Trick stood on that porch and stared up at the partially cloudy night sky.

It was situations like that one that had him sure that he couldn’t live away from his family, not for long, anyway. He wasn’t the kind of uncle who only showed up on special occasions. He was the kind of uncle who taught life lessons, kissed skinned knees, and breathed with his nieces when they were having panic attacks, or their emotions were too heavy. If he had any say about it, he would always be that kind of uncle.

Taking it as a sign to keep on the trusting path with Stiletto so he could take her home, Trick took another deep breath of country air and then returned to the cabin.

After setting his phone on the dresser, he stripped down to nothing and climbed in bed with his woman.

“Who was that?” she mumbled sleepily as she settled against his chest.

“It’s handled.” He kissed the top of her head. “Go back to sleep.”

Chapter Fifteen

Two weeks later… Trick

Aftersheslammedthekitchen cupboard doors for the third time that day, Trick closed his laptop and set it aside before he climbed out of bed and made his way over to her. He tried to wrap his arms around her from behind, but Stiletto shrugged him off and stormed away. She stepped into the bathroom and slammed the door behind her.

Putting his hands to his hips, he sighed and approached the door. “Stiletto.”

“My name is Stella.”

“Yeah. Okay. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” She sounded offended that he even asked.

“You’re slamming shit around. Is there something you need? I’ll go and get it for you.”

“Of course. Of course, you’llgo get whatever I need. I couldn’t possibly go and get peanut butter cups and tampons for myself. Nope, I’m stuck here like a damn animal.”

“Stiletto, we—”

“Stella!”

He sighed again and looked down at the floor, trying to keep a lid on his temper. His bear wasn’t helping matters by demanding he fix what is wrong with their mate. The huffing and pacing bear was just putting him on edge.

“We will discuss the name thing after I get back from the fucking store. You know why I make the runs. We’ve talked about it.”

“Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They know me. Someone might recognize me. Blah. Blah. Blah.”

“Anything else you need?”

He heard something hit the floor, and he wondered what it was, but he figured she was okay when she yelled, “Freedom!”

“I’ll. See. If. They. Have. Any.” He was about to turn around and leave when a wave of guilt swamped him. Gentling his voice, he said, “Your phone is in the top drawer of the dresser in the ball of socks in the back. If you need something else, text me. My number is already in there.”
