Page 13 of Never Letting Go

“My thoughts exactly,” Olivia said. “Who thinks pretending to drown is funny?”

“I’m just glad Grayson told him off in front of everyone. I was worried he might not say anything about the pranks.”

Maya leaned closer to them. “I can’t believe his mom slapped him across the face and swore at him in Spanish.”

They all laughed, but a chill ran down Rita’s spine. She glanced around, trying not to be obvious. Everyone appeared to be engaged in conversation with those at their tables.

Why couldn’t she shake the feeling of being watched?

ChapterEight

Ariana knocked on Rita and Grayson’s door, her heart threatening to explode out of her chest. Everything was ready for the big gender reveal celebration. Now all she needed was the parents-to-be.

She alone already knew the baby’s gender. Rita and Grayson had the nurse at the ultrasound seal the result in an envelope, which Rita had promptly given to Ariana so she could order the necessary items for the reveal.

It had been hard keeping the news to herself — she hadn’t even told Damon. Rita had sworn her to secrecy. At last, in a few minutes, everyone else would know.

Ari knocked again.

The door finally opened. Rita wore a gorgeous teal dress and a huge grin. Grayson had on a blue and pink tie with his white shirt and dark slacks.

“Nice.” Ariana gestured toward the tie.

He smiled and adjusted it. “Thanks. I thought it was fitting.”

“Let’s go,” Ari said. “I can’t wait for you two to find out.”

“Youcan’t wait?” Rita laughed. “Every day I’ve had to restrain myself from begging you to tell me.”

She shook her head. “You’d have never gotten it out of me. I promised you I’d keep my lips zipped.”

“And that’s why you’re my maid of honor.” Rita kissed her cheek. “Let’s do this!”

Ariana was bursting at the seams to see their reaction. The banquet hall was filled with pink and blue balloons, streamers, and other decorations. All the guests had chosen either a pink or blue crown based on whether they thought the baby was going to be a boy or girl.

She heard the festive music before they reached the hall.

Rita squealed and grabbed Grayson’s arm. “We’re finally going to find out!”

He kissed her palm. “I can’t wait.”

Ariana darted into the room before them so she could see their faces.

Rita’s eyes widened, and she covered her mouth. Grayson looked around, his mouth gaping.

“Do you like it?” Ari asked.

Rita threw her arms around her friend. “It’s perfect! Thank you!”

Ariana grabbed the parents’ crowns — they were different from all the others because they had both pink and blue on them.

Rita slid hers on her head and nudged Ariana. “No crown for you?”

She chuckled. “I think that would give it all away.”

“It was worth a try.” Rita shrugged.

“Go play.” Ariana motioned toward the side of the hall with gender-prediction games. It had been surprisingly easy to find half a dozen for the party. “Or have some snacks — all pink and blue, of course.”
