Page 63 of Never Letting Go

“Of course I did. You’re my sister.”

“If you ever need me, I have your back.” Rita flopped onto the nearest pillow. Suddenly her eyes were as heavy as lead weights. She closed them, ready for a deep sleep, but her teeth felt gross. If she didn’t brush them, she’d never be able to fall asleep.

Rita climbed over her sister then stumbled toward the bathroom. She stepped on another paper. This one was folded too. She picked it up and tossed it in Grayson’s suitcase. “What’s with these notes?”

“You should see what they say.”

“They’re not mine.”

“Maybe Grayson left them for you. They’re probably sweet encouragements.”

Rita’s heart warmed at the thought. “You could be right.”

“What are you waiting for?” She tossed the first one to Rita.

She caught it, barely, and unfolded it. It took a minute because of all the folds.

The writing wasn’t Grayson’s.

It looked slightly familiar, but she couldn’t place where she’d seen it before.

“What does it say?” Bella asked, her eyes full of curiosity. “Or is it too personal to share?”

Rita scanned the words, her body turning to ice.

“Is something wrong?” Bella’s voice sounded far away.

“I… it…” Rita couldn’t get out anything else.

The note wasn’t from Grayson. It wastoher, but not from her fiancé.

She looked at her sister, her hands shaking. “Who all has been in here?”

“You’re scaring me.”

“Who?” Rita demanded.

“I don’t know! I haven’t been in here all that much, but it seems like people have been coming and going from what I’ve seen.”

Rita’s stomach lurched, and it wasn’t from the pregnancy. In fact, she needed to calm down for the baby’s sake. But someone had been in her room and left a threatening note.

“What does it say?” Bella reached for the note.

She struggled to focus on the writing. It took a moment, but it all became clear.

Dear Rita,

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’ve always been in love with you. From the moment I first saw you. Your beautiful smile, the graceful way you move. Everything about you is pure perfection.

Somehow you’ve never seen me. Ever. And everything I’ve done since we met has been for you. Anytime I can make your life easier, I do it. Not that you’ve noticed.

But you noticed Grayson. Who doesn’t? Everybody loves him. Nobody ever sees me. Even when I’ve been rock solid in your life, helping you when you had all those problems with Boone. I made sure nobody ever found out about the guys you saw behind his back. And believe me, he came sniffing. You weren’t as sly as you thought. He was on to you, but I convinced him otherwise. Because he deserved it for the way he treated you.

You got away with so much because of what I was doing behind the scenes. I always knew one day you would recognize my hard work. How devoted and faithful I am.

But then I made the stupid decision to invite my cousin to work so we could catch up. Of course you noticed the famous face right away. I didn’t expect you’d get engaged to him in the blink of an eye.

Things are only going to get worse for everyone you care about if you don’t realize we’re meant for each other. It’s you and me, even if you won’t acknowledge it yet.
