You will. Eventually.

All my love,

Javier

Rita dropped the note, her whole body now shaking. It had been Javier this whole time.

He was in love with her? There had never been a single spark between them. He was her employee.

Not anymore.

Everything around her took on a red hue.

Bella scrambled off the bed then picked up the note. Her mouth fell open as she read it. “Is he the one who killed Mateo?”

“It sure sounds like it.”

“Does he haveAbuelita?”

“That would be my guess.” Rita grabbed the note then crumpled it into a ball.

“That’s evidence.”

“I don’t care! Besides, there’s another one on the nightstand.”

“We should read it.”

“I’ve seen enough.”

“What are we going to do?”

“I need to think.” Rita threw the note into a garbage can as she strode to the nearest window. Despite the dark storm, a few stars twinkled on the horizon where the clouds were starting to break.

Bella took the wadded paper from the garbage. “The police will need to see that.”

“They aren’t coming. We’re on our own. Come on.” Rita flung open the door. “We have a killer to catch. I’m not letting him get in the way of my marriage.”

ChapterThirty

Ariana stopped at a fork in the hallway and looked around. “Which way did the scream come from?”

Damon gestured to the left. “I think this way.”

They darted down the corridor. Three people had gathered together farther down the hall.

“Did one of you yell?” Damon called.

“Yes!” A woman waved them over.

As they got closer, Ari could see who they were. She recognized them as Grayson’s relatives, but she couldn’t remember any of their names. Before she could ask, someone on the ground caught her attention.

Rita’s grandma lay on the floor. She was in a long nightgown and had curlers in her hair.

Ariana ran toward her. “Is she okay?”

“She’s breathing,” the woman said.

Ari skidded to a stop, relief washing through her. “She is?”
