He wrapped his arm around her. “Lean against me.”

It took a minute, but they managed to help her to her feet. Still leaning against him, she took a steady step forward. That was a good sign.

“How did you end up on the ground over here?” Ariana asked.

“I don’t remember.”

“You left the dance and changed out of your dress. What happened after that?”

She looked deep in thought for a moment. “I wanted ice from the machine because there wasn’t any in the freezer.”

“Is anyone else staying with you in the room?” Damon asked.

“I’m staying with my son and his wife.”

“That’s good. My wife and I will help you to your room. If nobody else is there, we’ll take you to the suite to stay with Rita.”

“Oh, I don’t want to bother her.”

“Trust me, she’ll be thrilled to see you. Which way to your room?”

They made small talk with her, and she answered every question with spunk and a little humor. She gained more strength with each step she took.

“You don’t remember how you fell?” Ariana asked.

“No. It’s all a mystery.”

“You don’t have a headache? Sore spots on your head?”

“I’m fine other than being tired,” she said. “I can’t thank you two enough for helping me.”

“A lot of people are looking for you,” Damon said. “We just happened to be there when you woke up.”

“Oh, there’s my room.” She pointed to one of the doors and pulled out a keycard from her pocket.

Once the door was open, Rita’s mom raced over. “There you are! Diego is out looking for you, and I’ve been waiting in case you returned.” She turned to Damon and Ariana. “Where did you find her?”

They explained the situation, suggested they both get some sleep, then left.

“Now we just have to find Emerson,” Ariana said.

“And figure out who the real killer is. It’s definitely not Trey.”

“Not unless he put on the performance of a lifetime earlier.”

Damon shook his head. “I saw the look in his eyes. That fear couldn’t be faked.”

Ariana sighed. “We’re no closer than we were before.”

Heavy footsteps sounded behind them.

Her stomach knotted as she turned around.

Rita and Bella ran toward them, waving papers around.

“It’s Javier!” Rita stopped and gasped for air.

“You’re sure?” Damon asked.
