“It appears they did. My mom ran away to Australia and my father ordered a hit on us.”

She drops her fork and stares at me incredulously. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

“No. I’m not. My brother dealt with it and the threat was averted.”

“And your father?”

Her eyes are wide and widen still further when I say with a shrug. “Dead.”

“And I thought my family was fucked up.”

I nod, raising my glass of water in a toast. “To two fucked up families.”

She nods and raises her glass, clinking it against mine with a wicked smile.

“I’ll second that.”

As she sips the water, her face catches the light and despite the night she had, she has never looked so attractive to me. So beautiful, very natural with none of the make-up that wore off sometime in the night. Her eyes sparkle and her face is flushed and there is an acceptance in her that is begging to be tested.

I wonder what her limits are and what she will back away from. I intend on finding out and this week should be interesting.

“Tell me about your brother. Is he as weak as I believe him to be?”

“Fuck you. Rafferty isn’t weak, he’s just well, successful.”

“Successful men aren’t weak, Allegra. They need their strength to reach their position. He must have natural ability and got lucky then.”

“Damn you, Shade. He worked bloody hard for this, which is why he’s freaking out that it could be taken from him.”

I shrug. “The woman who was found murdered. Tell me about it.”

I’m interested because I need to know the full story before I hand it over to Kyle to deal with.

“Her name was Taylor Sutherland. They met at a party.”

“What party?”

“I don’t know, he was invited to a party by one of the team and she was there. Anyway, they hit it off and ended up in a nearby hotel. You can guess the rest and they left soon after.”

“Did he walk her home?” I say curiously, and she shakes her head. “No, he called her a cab, and they went their separate ways. That was the last he heard of her.”

She gazes out on the sunrise and says sadly, “Two days later, she was found on the side of the road with her heart cut out. The cops obviously don’t know about her night with Rafferty because nobody has been to see him. What do you think happened?”

A cold feeling creeps over me as I think about the way she died. It has a familiarity to it that alarms me.

Allegra carries on eating, but my mind is working hard. Something isn’t adding up. I don’t like it and need to talk to my brother fast.

After breakfastI show Allegra to the guest cabin to shower and change into something more comfortable. I have several generic items equipping the closet there because this isn’t the first time I’ve entertained on this boat. I don’t recall one as interesting as this one and I’m happy it’s turning out to be as much a pleasure for me as it is for her.

I head to my den that I keep for business and waste no time in calling my brother, who answers immediately.

“Your plan is working, I see.”His low chuckle momentarily makes me smile.

“I’m guessing you follow Allegra on Instagram then.”

He laughs.“One of my personalities does.”
